Has anyone heard of Marquise de Sevigne chocolate? I was browsing
eChocolates.com today and saw several interesting dark chocolate varieties in a blue package I didn't recognize. The site didn't identify the company, and you can't make it out from the image. So I emailed eChocolates.com about it, and they said they were made by Marquise de Sevigne in France, apparently a fairly "exclusive" company with 3 stores in France and one of the oldest brands of "Parisian" chocolate. They also mentioned a Google search reveals that she wrote extensively about chocolate while at the royal court and was known for her hot chocolate. They produce a few 70% bars, including one with nibs, one with almonds, and another with coffee. They're under a dollar an ounce, so they're not fabulously expensive. I don't see any other American importer - seems worth an order to check 'em out. Has anyone tried this brand - if so, what is it like? |

The proprietor said that he'd been shipped some by mistake (presumably from eChocolates, since he said it was from his Cluizel distributor), and he decided to just put it out and sell it rather than try to ship it back. The package has just this to say about the company: Marquise de Sevigne 32, Place de la Madeleine - 75008 PARIS www.marquise-de-sevigne.com As for the chocolate itself (a plain 70% bar): decent snap, nutty caramel aroma, average smoothness with an occasional bit of grit. The flavor is straightforward - somewhat sweet for a 70%, starts off mild with a hint of orange, but mostly just plain ol' chocolate. Overall, I'd say it's a good premium-level chocolate bar, and I wouldn't turn it down if it were offered to me, but it's nothing to write home about.
