Has anyone bought or fondled the new Kitchen Aid 1,000 watt stand mixer -- 7 qt,

I will be buying a Electrolux (sounds like a vacuum clearner, I know) in the next few weeks. Now KitchenAid food processor, I love it far and above Cuisinart. I mention this just so one won't think I'm biased against KA. Larry, I see a box-y Cuisinart mixer 1,000 watt at WS. Dee |

I ask as one who has two (#1 is a lift head Ultra, #2 is a bowl lift Epicurean) and I love both of them. jt |

But I won't anymore. The LAST straw came 5-4 when I ws making a croccodillo bread, which I had planned researched the correct flour, had it shipped, etc. The third day of fermenting, I used the mixer and there was metal pieces in my dough as I poured it out. Yes, it came from the mixer. The last fiasco was oil running out into dough. I'm tired of dealing with KA, their returns, their offers, their promises, their charges. I've had several since 1975. Others can praise theirs to high heaven, but my experience has been the other side of the coin. When I started researching something else to buy, I certainly got a lot of astonished opinions about my experiences (shortened of course due to time constraints ;-))). I envy you your satisfaction. Dee, you must be a KA disaster magnet! So I want to thank you for absorbing all those bad experiences so that others of us could be problem-free. 8;) -- Larry (2 KAs since 1970, no problems -- but still admiring the Kenwood design...) |

I realize you are right; I'm the 1%, over-over-over-over and over- again. LOL. Your humour is not wasted on me. Smiling-ly, Dee |

Opinions? Larry..........you sure you don't even have a typo with the brand? WS is featuring a CUISINART 12 speed 7QT 1000W mixer on page 36. KitchenAid doesn't even list that mixer on their own website let alone a Hobart site. All I can say is Cuisinart need to stick with food processors. The rest of their attempts in the kitchen have been so-so. |

However, I have their toaster with all the buttons. It can't even toast a decent slice of bread. It toasts very unevenly.. I bought their burr grinder for coffee. Not too happy with it - I think my little inexpensive Braun does a better job. Dora |

I just took a look see at this on the cuisinart site (http://www.cuisinartstandmixer.com), and I have to say that I am less than impressed. Due to my past restaurant experience (using stand mixers that stand on the floor, or at least 3 1/2 feet tall on the prep table), I prefer to bowl lift design for those larger machines. The Lift heads just seem clumsier to me - personal preference. They have a countdown timer on it. I don't get it, why do you need one? When I use any mixer, I'm there, working it until it is done. If I'm making cookies or some sort of batter, I'm not going to go off to another room for an extended period, I'm there, keeping an eye on everything. And three "power outlets." One for KA style accessories, two top mounts, one of which is for food processor and blender, the other for only a juicer. And most likely, the majority of people who get this machine will have separate food processors, blenders and juicers. I think this design is overload of non-necessity. Maybe it's just me. As to the 1000 watt motor, I have to also know about the transmission to the beaters too. A big motor on an improperly designed tranny will result in less power to the blade. I doubt there is any power loss issue here, but KA's gearing is well established so that motor powers have relative meaning. With this Cuisinart machine being new to the market, the power ratio is not yet widely known. And to the raw power, I would say that there is a point where high end power loses worth. I have a 475 watt KA mixer with a bowl lift, and I have yet to try anything that seemed to overload the motor, so I haven't felt any kind of need or desire to get a Professional (525 watt) or Pro 600 (575 watt), so I certainly don't need to jump to 1000 watts, and 99+% of home cooks won't need that much muscle either. On the other hand, as this thread has already demonstrated, there are some who for various reasons do not want or like KA. For them, this might be a worthy alternative, and should well be explored. Cuisinart does have a good customer service track record, so that if anyone tries one of these and has problems, I am sure Cuisinart will not leave them out in the cold. I have both a Cuisinart food processor I love and the classic Grind and Brew coffee maker, and both work great for me. Unlike Krups, who went through some bad quality issues a few years back, Cuisinart has worked hard to engineer good products, and I have no doubt they put the engineering behind this machine to justify to price. It's simply that it is so new, that I would want to wait for Consumer Reports or some cooking mags. BTW: I just watched the promo video from the web site, and the thing is HUGE. Much bigger foot print than my Epicurean. And the motor housing raises up like a draw bridge. It looks like it is well balanced, because the ladies in the video don't appear to be struggling when they lift it up. And one other BTW: I was looking at the blender, food processor and juicer attachments, and this thought hit me. The machine is huge, as I already noted. These attachments, when put on this machine while on a typical kitchen counter, will be at or above eye level for most people. Again, I think there is some overkill here. Just some thoughts, based solely on what i saw on the Cuisinart web site and its promo videos. jt |

Yes, you are right - I meant Cuisinart, but automatically typed KA when thinking of stand mixers. Sorry. -- Larry |

Sounds like from your time frame (twenty years ago) that it was probably made by Hobart. Chris in Pearland, TX |

Assuming it is a whole lot like the Kenwood with some new features added and updated styling. My thoughts on our Kenwood, which we have had for a few years: 1) It is big and heavy - not something you want to have to drag out of a cabinet to use. It is best left on the counter. 2) The 7 qt bowl is tall. You look at it and think it is silly to use it to whip a bit of cream or a few egg whites, but by virtue of the tall narrow shape, it works fine on small amounts. 3) It is strong. I have never really seen it strain kneading pasta dough or bread dough, but I know we aren't as hard on mixers as some. We don't make huge bread dough batches. 4) It is loud. Very loud - the worst feature of the whole thing. 5) We have the meat grinder attachment. I can't compare it with others, but I can say it works fine and has given me no problems. 6) The speed control is great - it goes from off to 10 (sorry, no 11) in one smooth motion, with it being very easy to set it at a very low speed. It is no problem to keep dry ingredients in the bowl and not floating about the kitchen. 7) The head tilt is well designed and built. It uses a spring of sorts to balance it. To raise the head, there is a knob you turn which releases the thing, and it comes up on its own - not too fast, not too slow. To lower it, you push it down against the spring until the catch clicks. 8) The planetary motion works well. It covers the whole bowl with little fuss. 9) The metal bowl seems seriously overdesigned. It is very thick and heavy. The plastic bowl works fine, and it is a real convenience to have two bowls. Later, Mark Muller |
