Default What is this piece Le Creuset really for?

I bought this piece of Le Creuset cast ironware at a flea market at the
weekend - too good a bargain to miss!!

However, I'm not sure what it was originally marketed as! Obviously it
is meant for warming (but what) or for cooking at the table? I thought I
could use the base as a casserole warmer even if it gets used for
nothing else!

I can't find it in the current Le Creuset catalogue or on any web site.

The top is about the size of a large dinner plate and is domed and dimpled.

The last photo shows the base with a 28cm/11 inch diameter casserole on top

Any suggestions?

Looks like a sterno dish at the bottom.

Is the top invertible?

My guess is a tortilla steamer. Let the top heat up, dip a tortilla quickly
in water then toss it on the pan to steam/cook? BUT you could do that
faster in a pan over higher heat.

I dunno!

No the top doesn't invert.

It looks like a flat bread griddle to me. There are varieties of
Indian flat breads that are cooked on curved surfaces. And it looks
like it might be a pretty good one. The dome should collect heat
nicely.

I'm thinking it is LeCreuset's attempt at making an Asian/Korean grill,
sometimes called a "reverse wok". Something like it is used a lot for Korean BBQ
(bulgogi). In restaurants the setup often looks like this:

For home use, there's a smaller setup that is often placed over a single burner
portable butane stove. I've got one of these:

I don't know that Le Creuset actually expected anyone to cook bulgogi using it,
I think they were just inspired by the concept of a domed grill. Over the years
there have also been tons of light weight "smokeless" grills with a dome shape
for placing over a stove burner.

You don't have to guess -- I posted a link to an eBay ad which included a
picture of the Le Creuset box showing it in action as the maker intended it to
be used.

How well it performs might be another matter entirely, granted.
