I just goolged up a pitcher of a "french skillet" and I don't see
what's exotic about it. Also, I recall seeing the same range of
skillets in France as anywhere else.

Is this just a ploy to make it sound classy, like eggy toast?

Does not mean you can get to first base with pots & pans, though.
