Our 10-year old Asko has had one service call too many now, so it's time to
replace. Can anyone recommend large capacity, extremely quiet dishwashers in the $1,000 range? Brands I've looked at on-line include Fisher & Paykel, Kitchen Aid, GE, Bosch, and LG. I know these brands are available locally, so feedback on them is most appreciated. Other high-end brands are probably around too with a little digging. Thanks. Remsleep |

This month's Consumer Reports happens to include dishwashers. The two high-end products, Asko and Fisher & Paykel, were far and away the worst regarding repair history. The two quietest were the $1600 Asko and the LG LDS5811, at $650. The overall recommended models (based on cleaning ability, flexible loading, and quiet running) were two Kenmores(1374 and Elite 1373) and a Bosch(SHE45CO), all between $650 and $700. -- Larry |

Our Asko has only needed repair because rodents chewed through the water feed line. It isn't ten years old, yet, though. > The two quietest were the $1600 Asko and the LG LDS5811, at $650. I is both extremely quiet and cavernous. It is hard for the two of up to fill it before we run out of something. Matthew -- I'm a consultant. If you want an opinion I'll sell you one. Their repair rate is absurd. I would stick with a LG or the Kenmores for ease of repairs. Both my Maytags are somewhat noisy but I run them at 3 am and never heard them. Never had a service call on either one and they are approaching eight years old. |

We've had it for 5 or 6 years now, and (so far!) we've had no problems with it. Of course, new Maytags may be better - or worse. |

I ( and most others) am/are aware that several factories build/badge Kenmore appliances. You stated that "...their repair rate is absurd." Now, lessee--Different factories build Kenmore appliances. We may not know which particular factory builds a particular dishwasher, therefore their repair rate is absurd. Gotcha. To the OP--My mid-line Kenmore dishwasher was less repair prone than my high end Bosch dishwasher. OTOH, the Bosch is much much quieter, even when it's working. |

Some are Whirlpool, some are Frigidaire, some may be by yet another. The fat that a Kenmore sticker is on them does not make for easy repairs. |

Sears must insert some very good quality assurance specifications in their contracts, since their machines invariably fare well in Consumer Reports frequency of repair lists. For this dishwasher review, Amana, Whirlpool, Miele, GE, Kenmore, GE Monogram, Jenn-Air,Bosch,Hotp[oint, Frigidaire, and Maytag were all within the same statistically significant group leading the frequency-of-repair list. The only outliers were KitchenAid (barely), Asko, and F&P. -- Larry |

They often want special features or their brand, but most comes down the assembly line with the exact same internal components. In most cases, the people on the line don't even know what brand they are making until it gets to the final position where the unit front and labels are put in place. My company used to make parts and they went into a half dozen brands made at one plant and everything we made was exactly the same. |

We have the top Kitchen Aid and I'm extremely happy with it. Dishes and silverware come out sparkling. The only time a bowl did not clean properly was the time I loaded in behind something and water could not reach it. Very quiet. We looked at a few brands. Our local dealer no longer stocks Bosch because of too many service calls. We did not like the rack layout of the Maytag. My wife like the looks of this over the Whirlpool. I'd buy it again. |

It replaced a Kitchen Aid. We've had KA's for over 20 years in various houses and were previously very happy with them. But the one in our last house (4 years ago) and then the one in this house simply did not perform anywhere near as well as in previous years. The brand seems to have suffered under Whirlpool IMO. The Bosch, on the other hand, is exceptionally quiet and cleans better than any DW I've ever had and with very little detergent--- about a level tablespoon. I particularly like the way the water circulates and how much I can fit in this DW without having to worry about blocking the 'spray'. YMMV. -- "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." Sinclair Lewis |

I looked at the LG on-line. It had 6 reviews on e-pinions: 5 were 4- or 5-stars; one was one-star. The crux of the one-star review was that the top-of-th-line LG was too big for a standard 24" deep dishwasher station, and the reviewer's required some demolition work to get it in the enclosure. Sure enough, I checked the dimensions, and the LG is 25" deep, while our dishwasher enclosure is the standard 24". Ours is a small kitchen, I'm a big guy, and losing an inch in that passage could lead to trouble (not to mention being aesthetically unpleasing). Which is a shame, as everything else about the LG looked very good. Remsleep |

It just seemed like a good idea. I knew I wanted a ss front, but it really started off with I NEED NYLON and adjustable racks; then escalated. <g> Yesterday, I got ****ed when the new Oxo splatter guard I had ordered said that it would fit in a dishwash, but it didn't fit in mine. I just couldn't stand it anymore. LOL. Dee Dee |

So, in the end, I was over-ruled by SWMBO, who insisted on the Bosch over
the Kenmore. The reason? The tines in the Bosch lower rack are set more narrowly, allowing the placement of more plates. It's very pretty and I'm sure will last at least 10 years. Thanks to all who contributed to the thread. Remsleep |

I suspect the bad rep Fisher and Paykel have comes from operator error. They are very differnt than a conventional dishwasher because of the drawer. If it's overloaded so the top can't close water drips out inito the works. If it's opened while it's running it fouls it up. Because of the small volume of the drawer and the little amount of water in use, spilling a bunch of soap into the drawer can cause foaming. Anyway, if you know how it works it seems very reliable, but someone who doesn't know any better can screw it up. |
