I recently purchased a Kenmore range(http://www.sears.com/shc/s/
p_10153_12605_02294214000P?keyword=94214) with hidden bake element for the oven. I am having some issues with the oven. I have cooked many things in the oven so far & any time food or pizza grease(the worst) drips on the oven floor I get a large amount of smoke build up in the oven. When I open the door to check the food the large cloud of smoke comes out & sets off the smoke alarms & we have to open the windows. I don't see any smoke coming from the oven vent that comes out the back burner. I really see no reason for ever having to use the self clean cycle as the floor is as clean as a whistle cause it burns off during cooking. What I am wondering is is this normal with hidden bake elements. I have resorted to covering the bottom rack almost completely with foil. I am seriuosly considering returning it and going back to a coil version oven. This range has other features I like so I really want to make it work. Thanks |

Granted, the vent allows smoke out slowly, but you should certainly be able to see some coming out if the oven is filled with smoke. -- Larry |

Not necessarily -- it might be that the rush of oxygen that enters the oven when you open the door is required to produce the smoke. I have noticed this effect myself. I must admit that I am not entirely satisfied with my own explanation, which relies on the idea that the environment inside the oven be low on oxygen because something in there is using it all up more rapidly than it can diffuse in through the vent or other cracks. That seems possible but a little unlikely to me. -- Randall |

Thanks Since it was a recent purchase, you must be covered under a service warranty - and this is a service problem. Give Sears a call at 1-800-4-MY-HOME - they've been really helpful with any issues I have. (By the way - they have a great clause: if they are called three times for the same problem, you get a new unit.) Dora |

Well, it has a glass window in the door, so he should be able to test that hypothesis very easily. (BTW, www.sears.com, enter "94214" in the search box, and voila!) -- Larry |

I offered wrong information. Dee Dee |
