I buy 1-gallon milk but sometimes they spoil before I finish. One solution
is to pasteurize it every few days. To do this, I need a liquid container that is (1) microwavable (2) has an air tight lid (3) can withstand vacuum? So that I can microwave the milk (with lid open), then close the lid and put it in the refrigerator. After the steam condense, there would be a slight vacuum. Buying 1/2 gallon milk would also solve the problem but I prefer a cheaper solution. |

The half we are using, we transfer to another clean half-gallon container and put into the refrigerator. When we are running low, we put the frozen container into the fridge to defrost slowly (with some paper toweling under it) We use skim milk. I'm not certain how this would work with higher fat content milk, but since the milk is homogenized, I don't think it should cause a problem. -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. How about a glass half-gallon jug (the metal cap would have to be left off for
the microwaving part) of the sort that are popular with a lot of local brewerys, if you can get those where you are? Homebrew shops would probably have something similar too. -C peter wrote: > I buy 1-gallon milk but sometimes they spoil before I finish. One solution > is to pasteurize it every few days. Thereafter, when you buy your gallon, pour the milk into the two half-gallon (or, for that matter, four one quart) containers. Put one in the refrigerator for drinking, and freeze the rest. Milk freezes very well and does not seem to deteriorate at all. -- Larry |
