Default KitchenAid Dishwasher Reliablity

I need a new dishwasher since my old Kenmore (portable that converted
to a built-in) stopped working we've had it for many years and I'm
happy with it. That is except the part about it not working right
now...

I've been looking at Whirlpool/Kenmore/KitchenAid which I believe are
all made by Whirlpool. I'm leaning towards a P series KitchenAid.

A couple of questions: I'm looking for recent experiences (within the
last couple of years) with KitchenAid dishwashers. I see lots of
compliants from the 2000-2002 timeframe but not many comments in the
last 24 months. Would this indicate that Whirlpool worked out the
issues with the KitchenAid models? I would appreciate any recent
(2003/2004) experience comments.

A second question relates to the Consumer Reports reiliablity ratings
form the 2/04 and 8/04 issues. As I see it KA dishwashers are
Whirlpools with slightly different racks, different control layouts,
and a stainless steel tub. Kennmores are rebadged Whirlpools with
sightly different racks. If Whirlpool/Kenmore/KitchenAid are the same
machines, how come KitchenAid seems to have a worse repair record?

My therory on this is that becuase most of the KA machines would be
higher end models where Whirlpool/Kennmore are a mix of lower (i.e.
simpler) end and higher end models. The KA models tend to sell with
more bells and buzzers so they are more apt to break?

I think this might be true since Consumer Reports' least reilable
brands of dishwashers are all high end models like Bosch and Miele
where they tend to be sold all geeked up with features that might
break. On the other hand, since KAs are supposedy high end models
people are more apt to complain?

Anyway, I would appreciate comments good and bad about recently
purchased KitchenAid dishwashers.

TIA,
Eric

I think the latter reason is likely true - if you pay more for
something, you tend to be pickier and will complain about things that
you might blow off on a cheaper product.

FWIW, I have a KA dishwasher (Superba, probably equivalent to the
current S series) dating (IIRC) from the 2000-2002 period, and I've had
no problems.

It may indicate that it takes two or three years before significant problems
develop.

I bought KA because of very good experience in the past. My son bought an S
series about two years ago, I bought one a few months ago. They are both
working well with no problems. I read what you did, but after looking at
other models and construction, I felt the KA was still the best around.

My 20 year old KA worked well and I was happy with it, but like all
mechanical things, it was wearing. The new model is quieter, washes better,
rinses better. It takes some larger pans and trays easier with the larger
interior height than the older model. So far, I don't have a bad thing to
say about it.

I used to turn off the old DW if the phone rang or if we wanted to have
conversation during dinner in the dining room, about 8 feet away. No need to
do so with this one. VERY quiet.

Funny that you should ask about Whirlpool/KitchenAid/Kenmore
dishwashers... I just had a service tech come out to our house
yesterday to look at our 2.5 year old Kenmore that has developed a
very noisey main drive motor. The tech told me that he has seen this
problem a lot in the newer design Whirlpool dishwashers (the ones with
a single panel front), and the repair estimate comes out at a higher
cost than what we originally paid for the dishwasher!

The tech told me that the inexpensive Whirlpool/Kenmore dishwashers
with two panel fronts are very reliable, but the ones with single
panel fronts are a newer design that is not nearly as robust. Go
figure...

I have a KA dishwasher, circa 1997, that is on motor #3. All of them were
replaced because of excessive noise.

We have had our KA dishwasher now for about 3 years.
Zero problems, zero complaints except it make so little noise that I
can't tell when it is finished. :-))

Hi Eric!
I am in the process of having a new dishwasher installed tomorrow. I
went shopping with my Consumer Reports ratings and got the number two
rated Bosch model. The stainless steel interior of this dishwasher
really impressed me and the wife was impressed by the button you push
to "sterilize" the dishes. Also, this new design features a larger
washing compartment you will notice when the door opens the whole
front of the cabinet...it's not hinged six inches up from the bottom
like our old GE dishwasher. We didn't even make it to Sears to look at
their highly rated dishwashers.

Regards,
Bill

Let us know how you are doing in a year or so when you need parts for
THE repair.

I've heard good reports from users as far as cleaning dishes, but my local
dealer no longer carries Bosch because of the high service call rate. Did CR
give a reliability rating?

thats what the people in Detroit said when the Germans first started
shipping Mercedes into the states...sort of the Ostrich with his head
in the sand approach...I prefer not to remain ignorant...Bosch didn't
get to the top of Consumer Reports ratings for being a poorly designed
product but they do have a nationwide network of authorized factory
repair centers...http://www.boschappliances.com/find_dealer/5065.asp

Hi Edwin!
I don't think Bosch has been selling their kitchen appliances in the
continental United States very long. They are an old established brand
in Europe. It will take a while for Consumer Reports to get feedback
from customers like myself who are using this product. But, based on
other German products I use such as my Stihl chainsaw, I would say
German workmanship is "World Class"! My German chainsaw has lasted
ten times as long as the American made one I had that blew up.

You can't go wrong using those Consumer Reports ratings...they really
do put the products through their paces testing them for durability.

Bill

Mine is model KUDR01TJWH0. Bought it about three years ago. Local dealer
is horrible on service, but the only thing that's worse than the service is
the dishwasher itself. The upper wash arm has broken at least six times,
the pump seals went twice, the drain hose was installed wrong nad repaired
(not a dishwasher problem, but a nuisance nonetheless), and the upper dish
rack has had most of the plastic parts break and be repaired at least once.
Even when everything is supposedly "working" and repairs have been done, it
does a terrible job of cleaning the dishes. Nothing in the upper rack gets
clean, there's always crud all over the glassware and we have to wash them
all by hand, bowls have dried food crusted on the outside and pots have
dried crud inside. We have tried pre-cleaning, not pre-cleaning; scraping,
not scraping; rinsing and not rinsing; liquid, powdered and tablet
detergents; made sure the Jet-Dry dispenser was full - not a damn thing
works. Plus all the crud that *does* come off the dishes, builds up all
over the rubber door seal and the outside of the upper rack. Nothing seems
to go down the drain.

I am about >< this close to buying *anything* else, a cheap $200 Kenmore
will work fine, just as long as the dishes get clean. My parents have a
fifteen-year-old White-Westinghouse that gets used daily, the inside is
spotless, and the dishes come out perfectly.

No KA for me, ever again. Next one will be a Miele, Bosch or even a cheaper
Maytag or Kenmore.

Hey Jon!
From your description of all the possible solutions you have tried...I
wonder what your water supply situation is? Are you on city water at
80-100psi operating pressure? Could be that the water is just not
coming into the machine rapidly enough to clean the dishes? Are you on
a well? Maybe you should consider investing in a 1.5 to 2 horsepower
well pump that will push some volume of water up into that machine? Is
you water "hard" or "soft"?

I think you ought to personally call the engineering department at the
company who built your dishwasher and explain to those people exactly
what problems you have been experiencing. They may be able to figure
out why you are getting such lousy results with your dishwasher.

There is a similar publication in the UK, called "Which?". Bosch products
have been sold in the UK for quite some time, and will have been reviewed
there.
Most of the archived reports are members only, but I belive that there is a
a free 30 trial (there used to be).

I can understand your frustration, but there is a serious problem. Have you
talked to anyone at KA? If all their products were what you are
experiencing, they would be out of business in short time. Hard to believe
that one machine could have so many unrelated problems unless something
happened to it before you ever got it. Shipping damage? Sabotage? Dealer
service?

It may well be worth contacting the KA folk directly to resolve it. No one
person should have to have those problems.

I agree. When I contacted KA to find out where I could get a replacement blade
for my mini chopper (*someone* lost it), the guy asked for my address and sent
one out right away at no charge--Not even shipping. How cool is that :-). I'd
spent days trying to find one of those blades. Sure, that didn't cost them
much, but it won't hurt to give them a chance to respond to the DW problem.

Ditto, 3 years, quiet, easy to use, stainless tub, wonderful.

Since KA and Kenmore are both made by Whirlpool, you may want to avoid
those three brands. See my previous post in this thread for my bad
experience with Whirlpool/Kenmore, and the advice that the service
tech gave me.

I live in central Florida. My problem with my Kitchenaide has been that
the dishrack rusts. The replacement costs are close to the dishwasher
cost. Dishwasher is about 5 years old and rack is very rusty.
