Default downdraft "hood"

Our Jenn-Aire range with its lousy downdraft is due to be replaced.

I noticed that several companies make pop up downdraft vents - typically
about $500 for a 30" unit with a 500 cfm fan. These might work a little
better than the Jenn-Aire downdraft because the intake is at least above
the burners a little instead of below them.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Also, any advice on what to look for in a gas range on which I would
like to cook with a wok occasionally, boil pots of water for pasta, and
simmer stews? Just home cooking, don't need lost of stainless steel.

Thanks
