Which model of KitchenAid standalone mixers is the best for home use for
bread and pizza doughs? One of the recipe books I have stated I need at least a 250-watt mixer or it will burn out in a couple of years. Any feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks! -- Karen C. |

Look on Ebay if your shopping for one of these, I just bought a Kitchenaid
Pro 5 with the bowl lift in Onyx black for $140, which is at least $100 less than the best price I saw at retail. If I would have settled for a weird color I could have had one for around $100. The machine is supposedly a factory refurb, and it came sealed in a box from Kitchenaid saying factory refurb and includes a refurb 6 month warrantee, but I will be darned if I can see anything that looks less than brand new, it came with the three standard accessories ( paddle, whisk, and dough hook) and it makes great dough. For some reason EBay is full of them right now, just search for kitchenaid mixer and you will find plenty. -- Mikey S. http://www.mike721.com "Edwin Pawlowski" > wrote in message m... > > "Karen C" > wrote in message > ... >> Which model of KitchenAid standalone mixers is the best for home use for >> bread and pizza doughs? The pro series is 450 and lists for $399.. I did see the Artisan on sale this week at Meijer for $235, but I hesitated to get it because I was afraid it wouldn't last long and that I might be sorry for not going a step up from that. We do pizzas once or twice a week around here, and when my family is together, that's a whole lot of pizza. Thanks for your feedback. -- Karen C. |

That definitely would be the way to go if it lasted even a couple of years with regular use, I would think. I'll check into the refurbs. Thanks for the info. -- Karen C. |

They include items that were repaired after failing QA testing. These units never left the factory, are usually better tested and are almost always cosmetically perfect. Some units may be customer returns which are checked out and repaired as needed. They may have some cosmetic damage. There is a brand new KA mixer out called the Accolade. 400 watts, and all steel
gears. It's 5 qts. Be careful of buying mixers on Ebay only because of the warranty issues. KA goes by the serial # to see when it was manufactured if you don't have a receipt from an authrized seller. If that is over a year old you are out of luck as far as getting warranty coverage from them. You still get the fulI year as long as it was bought within a year of manufacture. Just found that out after reading the board at the KA website, as someone had asked. If you buy the mixer with a credit card most double the original warranty. I'm not sure how that would work though with Paypal. |

They are a wise buy if you get the full warranty. Most refurbs are simply returns that can't be sold as new. The box is torn etc, and they have to go back for repackaging. |

Thanks! > I don't think KA makes a model below 250 watts. Mine is 325W and if about 15 years old. Unless you want to make an enormous amount of dough or many successive batches of dough, I don't think you have to worry. Very stiff dough for 100% whole wheat bread or rye bread will be more taxing than a one pound batch of pizza dough. There are alternatives to the KA stand mixer. Viking has a great looking mixer, but I haven't seen any reviews. The Electolux Magic Mill would be a good mixer to look at if you are primarily interested in making large batches of dough. The Delongi (was Kenwood) mixer gets good reviews, although getting parts and service may be an issue. Finally, if you are buying power rating on a budget, you might look at the Wolfgang Puck 700 watt mixer for $199.00 It claims to be commercially rated and comes with two bowls, a splash guard (like the one on the Viking which looks better than the KA) and the standard whisk, paddle, and dough hook. That mixer has two power take-off and there is blender attachment as well as a grinder, etc.available. Here is a link:http://tinyurl.com/6ta6z Also at HSN is a Hamilton Beach stand mixer, all metal, 400 watts, $169.00 http://tinyurl.com/65jsb |

A single 700 watt (now 950 watt) motor drives, either a dough mixing bowl (this bowl also has two different kinds of whisks), a food processor (separate bowl, with numerous disks) & a blender. I have had one for 10+ years and love it. I prefer it to the KitchenAid because the dough mixing bowl is covered and so you do not have a mess with flour flying. Its capacity for dough is considerably higher than the KA (I have routinely done 6-7 pounds). I like the food processor bowl on it too because again it is sealed and so you do not have liquids leaking out from the bowl. It was one hell of a value (Sub $300). It never seemed to catch on in the US and now appears to be sold only in 220 volt versions for Europe. Unless I am making a large batch of dough, I use my FP instead of the KitchenAid stand mixer. The FP is faster and way less messy. Also, the FP will cost less and do more than a stand mixer. I have both, but I got my FP before the stand mixer. Of course if you make a lot of cakes or large batches of cookies, the mixer would get more use. I think people should consider both appliances. |
