Their quality has gon into the toilet. I can't recommend a good downdraft model but I certainly wouldn't buy theirs. The one that I had in the late 70's was actually very good but a friend of mines more recent model isn't worth a plug nickle. -- Steve |

I have a JennAir dual-fuel range with a convection oven. I would never buy another one. The oven is satisfactory although the bottom of the oven has warped. The range top is very hard to clean. I think they have improved the burner design, buy my burners are really cheap pieces of stamped metal. The output of the burners is inadequate and the grill is also anemic. Downdraft ventilation isn't very effective and with it being at the level of the burners (as opposed to telescoped above them) it draws off a lot of heat and very little smoke. I had to replace an igniter and the computer controller board recently for over $300 in parts. I also replaced the downdraft grill and the right side burner modules ($150+) because the burner had deteriorated, the porcelain finish failed on the drip pan, and the paint started to peel off the permanently discolored downdraft vent cover. I would highly recommend that you get a different range with higher output burners and a good overhead (updraft) hood. You could do a better job of grilling with a nice cast iron grill pan on high output burners than with the gas grill in the JennAir. As you may know, the range only ships with two burners, so when big family dinners come around you will have to spend a couple hundred extra dollars to get the burner module for the left side. The griddle is also extra. If you still aren't convinced, look for a distributor in your area that has one hooked up. Turn on the burners and then turn on the downdraft fan. You will see the flame dramatically distorted by the downdraft. If you put your hand near the downdraft intake you won't be able to keep it there long since all the heat is drawn from the burners. Unfortunately the smoke isn't drawn away. Until I install an overhead exhaust I couldn't use the grill without setting off the smoke alarm. If you do a search on JennAir you will see many negative messages about that range. It think it is worse with the gas ranges than with the electric ones. JennAir is crap. Basically it is over prices, underperforming equipment that has a high failure rate and is hard to clean. |

I have a Jenn Aire duel fuel gas top/electric convection oven. Great oven,
but teh burners and grill aren't very good and the downdraft mainly draws off heat, and not smoke. Avoid downdraft. -- Regards Louis Cohen Living la vida loca at N37° 43' 7.9" W122° 8' 42.8" "culater" <culater@nowhere.***> wrote in message ... > I`ve bin thinking about getting a 30" Modular Dual-Fuel Downdraft with > Convection, range.I was wondering if anyone knows if it`s a good range to buy > & also I was wondering how much it would cost in Canada? Thanks in advance > for your help. > > |

I hate it. The auto striker works less than half the time. I have had it repaired twice and finally just unplugged it and use a lighter to light the burners. The burners are too close together on the 30". The gray grate and burner tops are very hard to clean. I am shopping for a different one now; so far, I like a Kitchen Aid or a Thermador cooktop. |

I find that the only thing that will clean the gray grates is oven cleaner. I put them in a garbage bag, spray with heavy duty oven cleaner (yellow can), and let them sit all night. I find that the odorless oven cleaner in the blue can doesn't work well. You can generally just rinse them off in the morning. I agree that the burners are too close. Another thing that I hate is the design of the grates. If you have a small pan it will rock because there is very little support. |

I have done this about once a month for the last 6 years. It makes them look like new. If they have a big build-up on them you might have to do this a couple of times to get them perfectly clean. After that you can maintain them with a periodic cleaning. I also use oven cleaner on the drip pans at the same time. |

When we got a 30" J-A gas cooktop 4 years ago, the grates allowed small
pans to rock. That's because they were mis-manufactured. They had six "pot-supporting" prongs but every other one was 1/4 inch too low. So with only three prongs actually doing anything, small pans would rock. I complained. J-A sent me, at no charge, four new grates. They were identical to the ones I already had. I complained again. The J-A very pleasant customer support person said that what I was complaining about was a feature, "Three point support." Seriously, that's what she said. I said I did not consider marketing's ploy to make a flaw into a feature to be good business. She said that she thought new grates were in process and when ready would be sent to me, also at no charge. After some months, the new grates arrived and were correctly manufactured. As I've pointed out in previous posts on this subject, I consider J-A the Yugo of the appliance world. Anyone want four melted burner control knobs? No wait--I can't send them. We're still using them. -Larry Vox Humana wrote: >If you have a small pan it will rock >because there is very little support. > > > > |

FWIW, I love my JA (manufactured by Maytag) fridge. I knew it was a risky purchase but it has so many features the others don't have and it has been a real pleasure to own/use (so far ;-) == > > -Larry > > Vox Humana wrote: > > >If you have a small pan it will rock > >because there is very little support. > > > > > > > > > |

I absolutely loved my older JA but the new ones don't seem to be of a very high quality. I threw my new one (four years ago) in the garbage. Really curious of the age of your unit. -- Steve |

In addition to all the cool features (it's very well thought out), it's pretty energy efficient. It appears solid and I pay attention to those things. I sure hope it lasts more than 4 years! My only complaint is that the ice dispenser is really loud. Here it is (note that "thick" shelf on the door just under the milk--That is a secret locking drawer that I hide my candy bars in Kids have no idea it's there :-): http://tinyurl.com/qivr == > > -- > Steve > > |

I think it is possible that J-A would replace the melted knobs, but then the
new ones, if also plastic, would melt--it is inherent in the design. We're going to discard the whole cooktop ASAP. -Larry gini52 wrote: > "Larry Sher" > wrote in message ....Anyone want four melted burner control >>knobs? No wait--I can't send them.
