Has anyone had a problem with an Amana bottom freezer refrig,? We bought one
a week ago and it cooled for an hour or so and quit. Maytag has bought Amana and so the Maytag man came and said they forgot to put freon in at the factory. OK, all is well. Now 2 days later it has quit again. We have bought lots of refrigerators over the years but never one like this. Has anyone else had a problem with this co.? Phyl |

We took delivery of an Amana bottom freezer 21 cu ft (or is it 22?)
refrigerator last January and the performance has been perfect. Only criticism might be that the icecube maker (optional extra) is pretty noisy when it refills. "Harvey R. Just about everyone who has bought one of their appliances in the past five or so years. If you google you will find lots of Maytag issues. I had problems with my Amana range and Maytag dryer. Neither lasted five years. I am very satisfied with my Jenn-Air (Maytag) fridge, however (so far--a little over a year). Can you get a refund or exchange? == == > > |

That sounds exactly like ours. It has a stainless steel front and filtered water. It is perfect if only it would work. In fact on the receipt it says no refunds or exchanges. I put it on my visa so they might help. The co. has been very nice and helpful but of course today being Sun. no one is around. My husband has meds that must be kept cold so I have been scrounging for help. Phyl |

Has anyone > else had a problem with this co.? > Phyl The repair person who came out had no way to know if the factory failed to charge the system with freon. Since it cooled for an hour, it had to have some refrigerant. All appliances are tested at the factory, so it had to have passed the quality control tests before it was shipped. After the service tech put more refrigerant in your system it cooled for a while longer. Simple logic indicates that there is a leak. The leak could have been the result of a manufacturing or material fault or could have occurred in shipping. Your dealer may have accidentally damaged the unit. Here is the basic warranty as listed on the Amana website: Full warranty one year parts and labor Five years limited warranty on sealed system components and interior liners Your dealer should be able to fix the problem or refer you to an authorized service center. Make sure that you tell them that you won't settle for someone coming out and putting more refrigerant in the system. I would sit down right now and start a journal listing what has occurred so far. Make sure you list the date and time of phone calls, who you talked to, what they said, and what actions were taken. You do have some rights based on the fact that you used a credit card. The terms are generally printed in very small type in the agreement you signed and may be on the back of your statement. You have a limited time to dispute the charges so make sure you look into it ASAP. Consumers also have rights in most states. You state's Attorney General's office most likely has a consumer protection division. You could contact them for specifics. Frankly, I would ask the dealer to take the refrigerator back and exchange it for an identical or better model at no expense to you. After all, you have been terribly inconvenienced. They sold you a defective unit. If they won't take it back, then I would tell them that you are going to dispute the charge with the credit card company. You have a right to expect a working appliance. It doesn't matter what they put on your receipt. I would go to the dealer and talk to a manager face-to-face - it will be harder for them to ignore you in person than on the phone. If the person you talk to doesn't give you a satisfactory answer, then work your way up the ladder. |

I have a friend who had an Amana frig as well. She finally returned it
becaue she couldn't get it to work properly. I had an Amana washer that was top of the line and had nothing but problems with it. Just bought a Whirlpool frig and so far so good.... Something isn't right with that fridge. Dawn |

Thank you so much for your help. > Phyl Good luck. I hope that the dealer will take care of it for you without any trouble. I always try to start out very pleasant and hope for the best. I had a very bad experience recently with a contractor that lead to legal action on my part. When I saw that things were going badly I started to document every detail. I followed up every conversation with a letter or email and took lots of pictures. When it came time to get an attorney, all the work was done. At the arbitration hearing I had everything well documented and he had nothing. Needles to say, things went my way and having everything documented made a very stressful situation more manageable. On a brighter note, I have had an Amana refrigerator for nearly 8 years and I am well satisfied. It is the best refrigerator that I ever had. I know that they were bought by Maytag, so things may have changed. My Jenn Air range (by Maytag) of the same age is poorly designed and has had some major problems. |

As you can tell I am not real confident but Proven Products, where we bought it has said they will bring us a new one if this doesn't work and they have called twice today to follow up. The Maytag man found a connection that had come loose and he re sartered(sp) it. He explained why the leak did not show up before but it still doesn't make sense to me. Thank you again. Phyl |

I wish I had demanded that the store take it back but I let them fix it. The same problem occured again later, but fortunately it still under warranty. |

It cannot keep a steady temp, with things either frozen solid or too warm, the gaskets split apart & pulled away & get moldy every summer & I have to use Clorox & Q-tips to clean them, the hinges rusted.. yadda yadda...it stinks from top to bottom. And don't get me started on complaints about my Kitchen Aid glass-top stove. Boron |

I can't speak to the bottom-freezer model, but we purchased an Amana a
while ago, and have never been happy with the quality. It never cooled sufficiently, and was poorly constructed, with a bundle of weak plastic parts. I'm going back to Kenmore. Mike Acord Harvey R. I hated it and cursed it every time I opened its door -- because of my own foolishness and laxity. (I hate saying I'm stupid.) It replaced an 18-yr-old Kenmore -- 21 cu ft. The Whirlpool was also 21 cu ft. In the years between the manufacture of the two, most of the mfgrs changed the specs on the ratio of space devoted to the freezer section and to the chiller section. More of the total volume is now dedicated to the freezer section than once upon a time. If one considers the amount of frozen food in a supermarket, I guess it makes sense. My new Whirlpool had less chiller space than what it replaced. I need chiller space, not freezer space. Just enough that it was a constant PITA. I didn't put my finger on it until a few days (couple weeks?) after we bought it. There was no returning it. I have a vague recollection of a split second when looking at them when it seemed to me that the bottom of the freezer door was lower than on my old unit. It was a fleeting thought that went right on by. Additionally, my husband got tired of hunkering down to see what was on the bottom shelf near the back. Then again, he suffers from Male Vision Syndrome (a term coined by our daughter). In his world, if it's not within 8" of his face, it doesn't exist. "Where's the _____?" "I can't find the ______." <deep sigh> Having seen a friend's new Amana with the freezer on the bottom, and liking the idea, my husband was an easy sell. And the Lutheran Volunteer Corps house in Minneapolis got a swell new refrigerator! And we'll take a charitable donation for it on our taxes. Win-win. -- -Barb State Fair prizewinning jams and jellies for sale at the Burnsville Senior Citizens Bake Sale, November 19, 2003; 9:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m. Diamondhead Education Center, Burnsville Parkway & Nicollet Aves, Burnsville. 952-707-4120 |
