If the piece on the right is a broader flat area, could it be something to open
up mussels and clams with?

Default What is this tool, could be food related...

The previous response is correct...it's for upening up oysters or
clams. I own one (not same brand) that looks identical.

What would be a formal name for it? So that one could search the web for
one?

At our house, that would be formally called "The clam thinga mahocky". We have
a lot of "thinga mahockies" at our house. (sorry, I couldn't resist)
