Default Salad Spinner

After what seems like twenty years our trusty salad spinner has died.
It was the type with a handle on top that is turned to spin the insides.

Any suggestions for a quality replacement?

I got an OxO Good Grips salad spinner two years ago. I worked very well for
about 18 months. Then, the top and bottom part of the lid separated..
After that it didn't work well and finally the gear that makes it spin fell
down the garbage disposal and got ground-up and became useless. I am also
in search of a new salad spinner. I found a couple cheap models yesterday
at a discount store and they didn't even work well right out of the box. I
found another one under the Westinghouse brand that was electric. It
combined the functions of a food processor's slicing and shredding disks and
also uses a motor to spin the salad dry. It looked interesting but the
price was $50 -- twice what the OxO model cost.

Oxo. Cook's Illustrated agrees.

I really like my Oxo. It spins really fast and because you press down
on it instead of turning a crank, it dowsn't want to get away from you
on the table. The brake is kinda silly though.

Oxo - worth the money and performs well. Have used it hundreds of times.

We have used the OXO daily for two years. They also make a small one,
for fresh herbs, parsley, etc.. BTW, Jacques Pepin uses one on TV.
Cheers,

I bought an Oxo, used it once, then promptly returned it. The problem is
that it spins in one direction only, and doesn't really spin all that fast
no matter how hard you pump on it, and the lettuce will always be wet
compared to other designs.

I bought a Zyliss to replace the Oxo, and am quite happy with it. It's the
centrifugal type with a string. With each tug of the string you change the
direction of the spin. It spins much faster than the Oxo (depending on how
hard you pull, of course), and you end up with drier lettuce in much less
time.

I agree with you on this. I found that the Oxo didn't spin very fast and I
had to open the lid, redistribute the contents, and spin a couple of time to
get them adequately dry. Then, as I mentioned, it broke after 18 months of
use. It wasn't the worst spinner I ever had, but it could have been better.
Since I last posted, I found the $50 electric slicer/spinner for $24.00 plus
shipping http://www.qvc.com/scripts/detail.dl...DETAIL&ref=CJ4
I think I'm going to try this one next. It costs the same as the Oxo and
does more.

I think the Zyliss and the Leifheit (pretty much the same) are as good as
any. Good cooking.

I have the Zyliss and it works as good as the Oxo. They recommended
either one. I like it so far.

I have a small and large Triumph. They work fine. I mostly use the small
one.
