Default recommendations for small appliances?

Spouse is thinking about getting some small appliances. Anyone have
recommendations for mixer, processor, or pasta maker? Something that I am
not going to want to replace soon, but also not industrial grade, covered in
gold foil, if you catch my drift...

Thanks, all.

Perhaps KitchenAid <http://www.kitchenaid.com/mixer20>? I "really like"
my recently acquired Artisan stand mixer. There are also available
attachments for the different KA stand mixers (many choices, including
pasta maker, shredder, grain mill, grinder, ice cream maker, juicer, and
more). I have and use the shredder attachment a lot.

Be sure to shop around.

I have a Kitchen Aid mixer and a Cuisinart 11 food processor and am very
happy with both of them. They are both almost 20 years old and just fine.
I also have a Braun stick blender, with a whisk and a food chopping
attachment, and get a lot of use out of that.

Thanks for the suggestions. *She* is not the cook in the family, but has
lately got the bug. I think a good carbon steel knife is plenty of food
processor, while she thinks all mechanical items are the same i.e.. a Pinto
is just a small Ferrari... That is why I am looking into this!

Just from personal experience:

Processor: KitchenAid 11-cup. Mine has run problem free for eight years so
far. I prefer the sealed buttons to the Cuisinart's lever switches.

Pasta Maker: Atlas manual. Just make sure your countertop has enough lip to
hold it, or you could do what Alton Brown suggests and attach it to a
specially modified ironing board. If you really don't want to turn the
crank, you can get an electric motor attachment. I make the pasta dough in
my Vita-mix.

Can't help on the stand mixer.

If you buy a KA mixer, get the pasta attachment for it. Works like the
Atlas, but with power.

Personally I do not think you can do better than the Cuisinart line and the
KItchen Aid is a good choice also. We have owned a Cuisinart food processor
for over 15 yrs. KA for 6 yrs and only had one problem with it. You can buy
cheaper items, but not sure if quality is there.
