Default Montreal Steak Seasoning

Has anyone used this before? If so, about how much did you use per steak?
I ask this because of a possible mistake tonight. It is my husband's
birthday and Angela cooked dinner for him. I bought a large bag of this
seasoning at the health food store. I've seen it other places, but it had
soy in it. This did not. Perhaps there are different versions of it?

Anyway... We've never used it before and she is only familiar with steak
rub. She put it on heavily like you would with a rub. I could see that it
had large grains of salt in it and I fear this would be too much salt even
for my salt loving husband.

She tried to scrape some off and I tried to take more off with a paper
towel.

In the end, he refused to eat it. Said it was inedible. Told her not to
eat it or she would get sick. Oddly she is eating it and says it tastes
fine. I can't try it because I don't digest steak.

So have you used it? Did she put too much on?

What. The. ????? Your daughter made dinner for her father on his
birthday, and he said it was inedible? I don't care what's in the spice
mix...when your kid cooks for you, you smile and eat it.

Yes! You don't want to be in this house right now. Truly you don't. He
also found fault with what she chose from the salad bar for him. And she
tried really hard to get something he would like.

I have since looked this up and it says to use 1 Tablespoon per pound of
meat. It doesn't look like she used too much. I also see other sites where
it says to heavily coat the meat. And it says it can be used on potatoes.

I know. She was very upset, thinking she did something wrong. But I showed
her where it said 1 Tablespoon for a pound of meat. If anything she used a
bit too little.

That's the problem with a lot of the stuff I get at the health food store.
No directions! They buy stuff in bulk and repackage it. I need to get
after Jeff and have him put directions on his labels!

I think a tablespoon is a lot too. When using some new seasoning it is a
good practice to use too little at first till you get the feel of it. Most
prepared seasonings like that do tend to have too much salt in them.

I generally don't use prepared seasonings. I only got it because there is a
restaurant here that uses it and I figured if they used it, it must be good!

Okay, I will. Angela just made a cake too. Not sure how well that will
come out because we had to use egg replacer for 3 eggs. We normally buy her
cakes but Betty Crocker now has gluten free mixes and they make small final
products. So we'll see...

Ahhh. That's really sad. I don't know anything about this seasoning, but I
do know that my father would have eaten *anything* I made for him and would
have found something good to say about it. He was always happy when we did
things for him, and he let us know it. Both of my parents were very caring,
giving parents (I'm *not* saying the situation is different for Angela), and
I think that attitude was part of the love we always felt. Can you suggest
to him to "lighten up" and let Angela know he appreciates her attempt?

Yes, it's hard to picture that from a parent. I had the same situation as
you with parents...thankfully.

I can't suggest anything to him. He just doesn't "get" it. The more I say,
the worse it gets, so I'm trying not to mention it. I just keep telling her
she did nothing wrong.

I have since looked up the seasoning and she didn't use too much. He is
claiming he only likes his steak with no seasonings whatever on it. Which
we know is not true. I always season the steaks when I make them and I know
restaurants do too.

Canadian steak seasoning is very strong stuff.
A light sprinkle is good. She couldn't have possibly known.

i remember my first attempt at cooking dinner for the family

GAWD it was AWFUL

and everyone ate and said 'thank you'

the next time they said 'wow, that was excellent, thank you!'

Ironically (considering the context of this thread), all of this brought
back a very special memory to me. When I was 10 years old, I wanted to bake
a cake for my father "all by myself." His favorite cake was angel food, and
I can still remember carefully and tediously separating 12 eggs--and
breaking a couple. Fortunately, my mother had suggested that I break each
separately into a cup and put that in the mixing bowl instead of cracking
them all into the same dish. My father absolutely raved over that cake and
told everyone it was the best cake he had ever tasted. Well, I don't
remember how it actually tasted, and I'm quite sure that my first attempt
would not have been the equal of my mother's, but I remember very well the
warm feeling that gave me to know how pleased my father was. That memory is
worth untold wealth, and I'm sorry Angela could not have had a similar
memory.

There was only one time my family didn't eat my cooking, I chose to do a
curried chicken. That was a mistake , we had never had curry before. We all
took one taste and put or forks down, my father asked us all if we would
like to go out to a steak house...didn't hurt my feelings one bit, that
curry tasted awful...but I was 15 and not 10.

I was taling about myself when I mentioned the angel food cake. I was 10,
and I have wonderful memories of times like that. I'm not sure how old
Angela is, but she is the one I was concerned about--it sounds like she was
trying to do something for her father and then was berated because he wasn't
pleased with it.

My father NEVER ever gave me praise for anything I ever did in my entire
life, and I am now an older woman.

I too hope Julie tells him to praise Angela for her attempt, and since it
was a new seasoning she never used before, she couldn't have known the
correct amount.

For future reference. If you think you have put too much rub or salt on
raw meat, just rinse it off. If it is a new spice combo or seasoning,
take a taaste on the tip of your finger sto se if it is a high % of slt or
other flavorings you don't like.

The reason I didn't try to rinse it is because she had already put two of
them in the pan. I had her put less on the other two, but I have since
found out she didn't use too much. I didn't taste it because there is
garlic in it and I can't stand garlic.

I used to make some stuffed Anaheim peppers back when I could eat cheese.
The filling called for one or more jalapeno peppers. All of the males in my
family like things as hot as they can possibly get. The store where I
bought the jalapenos had only 2 that looked fresh. I bought those and as an
afterthought also bought 3 serranos just in case. Well... All of those
peppers were just weak! I added every pepper I had and you just couldn't
taste the heat.

Try some labelled habaneros or Scotch bonnets, if you can find any.
Those are about as hot as you can get. To get any hotter, you need
to switch to pepper extracts.

I use it all the time. The one I use is called "Canadian Steak Seasoning"
by Tones. I sprinkle it on lightly. It does contain a lot of salt. If
you do both sides of the meat, use a lighter touch yet. But it is an
absolutely delicious seasoning, and I wouldn't do a steak without it.
