Default DOH!! ...drinking 'n dicing

I can't believe I did it. Same finger, same circumstances, only 30
yrs later!

Yep, 'bout whacked my finger off. Not really that bad, more of a
bloody flap wound, but it coulda' been a whole lot worse, me throwing
around my heavy Chinese cleaver with careless abandon. Making my
notbob's T3 fish curry and cutting up ingredients and got careless
over a couple glasses of wine. grrrr.... I did first aid and carried
on, the rice now in the cooker and the curry simmering away.
Hopefully, this will carry me another 30 yrs. :\

Don't drink and dice!!

Usually sober and quiet I must have a latent death wish or be a covert
masochist. I'm dicing along, something easy like celery or a carrot,
fingers not properly tucked, but at least two inches maybe three from
the knife blade when suddenly the blade swerves and goes for a finger.
Then back to dicing for three or four chops until I stop and wonder
what the hell just happened. Usually I've just sliced a finger nail,
but it could be worse. Can't explain the errant stroke. Wasn't a
hiccup or a cough; seemed just an involuntary quirk. Maybe I was a
knife fighter in a former life, or a spaz.

I had one of those a few years back. Perfectly sober. Careless
finger creep. Got off cheap with an "almost" nail divot. The JockP
tuck really does require some focus.

Sometimes a hard spot in the food will cause a blade to swerve... That's
what happened to me last time I cut myself badly.

I was trying to thin-slice the last bit of a block of cheese. The blade
turned when the cheese flipped onto it's side from the pressure and the
cleaver got me on top of the fingers.

Long shallow slice. Thought it was -never- going to stop bleeding!

<sigh>

Now I use a cheese board with a wire to cut ALL cheese. <G>

Yep, i used to love to open a bottle of wine and have guests in the
kitchen while i prepared a meal. Not any more, ouch.

Same with the "Yerba Buena" not that i have ever cut myself while
'toking' on some good "yerba" but it, perverse soul that i am, ruins my
appetite.

Don't feel bad. The other day I was clearly not thinking, though sober, when I
attempted to use a paring knife to pry the top and bottom sections of a bottle lid
apart. Knife slipped and plunged unceremoniously into my thumb of my bottle holding
hand, hitting the knuckle and sticking there. Painful stuff. At least you can blame
the wine....

It was white wine! Besides, I'd rather sterilize from the inside out.

I haven't posted here in a long time due to lack of appetite :-(
But alas, I am feeling better after a 7 month ordeal with thyroid
cancer. You guys actually cheered me up a few times during the fiasco.
So I'm feeling better and I"m back to lurking here and read this
thread which totally cracked me up!!! You guys are a hoot.

I actually cooked a real meal today, which is baking right now. If it
tastes good, I'll post the recipe. I bought the ingredients for two
meals...one is eggplant parmesan and the other is spinach lasagna. I
decided that I REALLY did not want to make both and have a double clean
up two days in a row....so I made, "eggplant parmesan lasagna."

As I said, I'll post the recipe if it tastes good. I'll ask the 11
year princess what she thinks. She doesn't hold back :-) In fact,
when she actually compliments something that I cook, that means it's
really really good. Or she is really really hungry.

Really glad that you're feeling better!!!

I'm sure we'll all look forward to the recipe. I had eggplant lasagna once
in a restaurant and it was delicious.

Yes, ...this time. But, since we're spilling our guts, I'll relate my
most embarrassing knife anecdote. Even worse than when I cut my
fingertip off. This is the one about a brand new Henckels paring
knife I'd just picked up on sale that day. Here goes:

I'm sure you've all heard the old saw, "A dull knife is a dangerous
knife". Well, leave it up to me to screw it all up. I pulled out my
shiny new Henckel paring knife and started in on some fresh crisp
apples. When I peel and slice apples and other soft fruits, I cut by
pulling the cutting edge toward my thumb. This is a bad old habit I
probably learned as a kid slicing bananas for my cereal with a table
knife. Anyone here who doesn't see what's coming?

Anyway, I get through the job of peeling just fine. But, that first
cut to halve the peeled apple..... Sure enough, the new blade bogs
down and stops about half way through the apple. Not the fault of the
brand new razor sharp cutting edge, the one Henckels puts on with a
precision machine and is perfect. Nope. Surface stiction. You know
....the reason they put those hollow little divots just above the
cutting edge on a lot of todays knives, like the all-the-rage santoku.
So, I put just a little bit more pressure on the knife to overcome
that pesky stiction. Boy, that sucker freed right up. It came screaming
through the other half of that apple like nobody's business and
continued effortlessly right on into my big fat thumb just like that's
what I wanted it to do! Yep! Just as clean and slick a cut as you
ever did see. About an inch long and a quarter or so inch deep. And
red! Oooh, such a pretty color red all over that sink.

"SON OF A @%*#^@&!!"

Needless to say, I don't cut too many things that way anymore. The
things I do, like still cutting bananas and peeling apples, I've got a
nice dull paring knife that'll barely cut butter set aside for just
such occasions.

Wrong again, Sheld-o! Everybody knows that in Alabama, everyone who
