Look, Nancy, just because it's the weekend, you can't just bare your gourds
to the world like that!

In the future, if I want to see your gourds, I will let you know.

P.S. woooweeee, mamaaaaaah NICE GOURDS

My gourds must be shared. It's only fair.

Actually, it's just a little joke ... 2 of them are salt and pepper shakers
that Jill gave me a few years ago. I put up the wrong shot that makes it
obvious to anyone who looks closely. Darn.

Thank you. I don't think so, but I have heard that people cook
and eat those little jack thumb 'pumpkins'. I could be wrong, but
these were sold in a little bag for decoration, they might even
be waxed or something.

I don't know if anyone eats them but...
after using them for Autumn decoration, store them in an unused area
separated and open to air flow for eight months to a year. After six
months, check to see if they're rotted. Discard if they are. After nine
months, shake to see if you hear a faint rattle. If you do, you're well
on your way to making a gourd rattle. Lots of possibilities open up
then. I live in low humidity and getting the gourds to rattle works for
me on most smaller gourds. Smooth skinned pear shaped ones work best for
me.
Google for gourd rattle. Fun for kids and grandkids if they rattle.

Sort of like the rain stick I have which I use to amuse people and frighten
pets. Makes quite a noise for something that looks like a stick. That's
a great idea, Leonard. I am really interested in gourd art, I even thought
of taking it up as a hobby. Gourd rattles would be fun.

I had to look up rain stick :-) Then I told my wife what they were. She
has deep roots in Arizona and stated "I bet they use ocotillo". Well,
they do for _small_ rainsticks. Thanks for that. I'd never heard of them
before.

Funny. I bought it from the Museum of Science in Boston some years
ago. As I was going back to my room I had to stop at the shop for some
reason. The girl behind the counter was eyeing my ugly stick, you could
see what she was thinking. What is she doing with that stick. I said, I
bought it at the museum. (I am an instigator) She look astonished and
said, someone sold you a stick???? (laughing) Good training, you know
she wanted to say, YOU PAID FOR THAT WHAT AN IDIOT!!

I turned it over (end to end) and it made that brittle raining noise. She
just about jumped out of her shoes. We had a big laugh.

Very nice! Are just two of them fake/S&P shakers?

How many vines did you plant?

Oh, I only planted tomatoes and herbs ... the gourds I bought
in a bag for $3.99. They looked so much like my S&P shakers,
even size-wise, I just had to have them.

Very pretty! At first I wasn't sure what I was going to see. Wasn't
altogether sure what you meant by gourds! :-)

Oooooh, nice looking gourds, Nancy! To bad you can't really do much
with them besides decoration. I got some really cool looking goose
shaped gourds a few years back for my front portch, but they rotted
after a few weeks. Just like my Halloween pumpkins...they all die on
me, just for spite. And leave a pile of gourd poop on my portch.
Jerks.

Well, seriously, they are among the nicest set of gourds I have seen.

Nice gourds nancy. My neighbor makes bird houses out of them. They
hang them from the trees and they're quite cool. Yours might be a
bit small for that though. Not sure what hummingbirds would go for.

We've got one of the goose gourds. Perfectly dried and many years old.
My SO had it before we met so I'm not sure if she dried it or what the
trick is. It rattles if you shake it. It's very light and the wind
blows it around but it's a great "yard art" item. Next year I have to
re-paint it and figure out a way to glue it to something for
stability.
