I have a jar of natural peanut butter (no hydrogenated oils) and it
says, "Best When Purchased By: JUN 26 2006. Well, that doesn't tell me how long I can use it for. It's about half empty and I found two tiny grey globs in it.. not sure if it's mold or what. How long does opened natural peanut butter last unrefrigerated? Thanks, Julie |

Peanut butter has a high fat content, unrefrigerated it will probably go rancid in about a year, two years refrigerated. If paying top dollar for premium peanut butter try to use it as quickly as possible as peanut butter flavor deteriorates rather rapidly... if you buy an amount you can't use within say six months than freeze half. Whole peanuts will stay fresher longer frozen as will all nuts. The only way peanuts don't last long frozen is if they're in Snickers bars. Sheldon |

Thanks, Sheldon.
The brand is Laura Scudders and it says 'Purchased By,' not 'use by.' Here's what Smucker's says about their peanut butter: "Q. Do I have to refrigerate Smucker's peanut butter? A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary, although it does slow down the oil-separation process." In another question, it says... "...we do recommend consuming them within one year of the purchase date." I'll just throw away the top half-inch to inch and use the rest. Thanks for your suggestions. ![]() -Julie |

![]() > Does Smucker's make Laura Scudders? Yes, they do! You can find it on their site. On the label, it says "(c) The J.M Smucker Company." > You're a brave woman. Haha, thank you. Well since the site said you can use it up to a year past the "Purchased By" date, I'd use it, and it's only been about six months. It doesn't smell or taste rancid. Who knows, those two little grey blobs might've been something from my boyfriend's doings. He's incredibly messy and I wouldn't doubt that he put a dirty knife in it. Ugh! Maybe I'll just make it The Boyfriend Jar of Peanut Butter for his use only... |

It would just put me off, I wouldn't chance it. I know, it's just me. New container of peanut butter time for nancy. Because nothing would convince me whatever it was hadn't contaminated the rest. > Maybe I'll just make it The Boyfriend Jar of Peanut Butter for his use > only... Oh, I've done that. (laugh) Between it being used to give the dog medicine and to bait mouse traps, I had my own, unsullied jar. nancy |

Mine is unrefrigerated and I have it for a long time. The jar says 3 months (I think I've had it longer). I just see some oil separated from the firm matter. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music, Recipes, Photos, and mo http://www.sequoiagrove.dk "You donīt frighten us, English pig-dogs!
