Default Ideas for a themed movie night anyone?

Hello all,

Some girlfriends and I are getting together next week to watch the
movie "Grease" (and bring back fond childhood memories) and I thought
it's be fun to have themed 50's snacks/appetizers/desserts to go with
it.

I did do a search of this group's archives, but only found a couple of
ideas. That with a quick search of some older cookbooks and I am
thinking of: salami rolls, rumaki, homemade Chex mix, and sundae bar.

But I figure I must be missing something, so I thought I'd open it up
to all of your talented foodie imaginations too.

Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Kris

Jello mixed with cream and hideous canned fruit cocktail. Best if your jello
flavor looks like congealed vomit after someone's had tomato soup for lunch.
I have no idea how my grandmother did it, but this was her master stroke,
second only to her packaged chocolate pudding.

Based on the ideas you've already mentioned, it's clear you're already on
the highway to hell, so this jello thing should fit right in. :-) Don't
forget the Kool-Aid, the kind with 3 tons of real sugar in each pitcher.

The characters spend a lot of time in the diner, eating hamburgers,
hotdogs, fries, milkshakes. You could have mini burgers or hotdogs.
Spike the milkshakes and you will have a fun dessert.

Seems like I remember a pep rally scene set at a bon fire. Did they
cook anything over the fire? There is a scene set at the drive-in --
popcorn, movie candy.

Grease is such a fun movie to watch with your girlfriends, singing and
dancing along. Have fun and report back!

I remember spending time at an A&W Root Beer drive in in the late 50's
in my early teens. Hamburgers, root beer floats (you could substitute
rum-cokes, "Cuba Libres" for those) and french fries liberally sprinkled
with malt vinegar. Hot fudge sundaes were the dessert of choice with
friends.

Adults were discovering quiche, pizza, and fondue at that time.

Michael, if everyone were honest, I bet most would admit to loving some of

Of course you'll post a *good* recipe for chopped liver? I used to
have a friend who made the absolute BEST, but I could never duplicate
it exactly even though I watched her make it many times. It's been
over 20 years now, but I salivate just thinking about it.

I have to admit that many/most of those foods were not something I

I think your time line is off, Grease is a film from 1978... attempted
to parody the '50s but in that regard it fails miserably... Grease
portrays the birth of the Disco scene, has nothing to do with Rock and
Roll of the '50s. For me Grease was a big disappointment, regardless
I'm not a Travolta fan. John Travolta was born in 1954, too young to
know the '50s.

Awww, come on. It was just a movie musical. I doubt seriously West Side
Story truly portrayed the gang mentality of the era, either and I'm pretty
sure they weren't singing to each other in the streets

Travolta didn't pretend to know anything about the 1950's. Travolta is an
actor (albeit not a very good one, IMHO) not a historian.

The OP just wanted to watch a movie and share some food with her friends.

Heh, I didn't know they still made it!

I had never eaten pizza until we moved to Cleveland in 1957. A neighbor
kid took me to a pizza place for lunch one day. Then we "discovered" the
Chef BOY-AR-DEE boxed mix. I think we used that for several years.

LOL I was reading another post on this thread when Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pizza
came to mind. I didn't know that it was still on the market. I remember
it being pretty disgusting. I grew up in a small town in the 50s. There
were no pizzerias. The Chef's was the only pizza option we had, and it
may be the reason I never had much interest in pizza.

Hey all,

Thanks for all of the input! Those sites were hysterical. I'll let you
know how it goes.

Kris, who knows that Grease isn't the best representation of the 50's
but loves it anyway

Well, the opening theme surely was Disco! That's probably the worst
offender.

It was funny to me to hear Grease, the movie, as being a childhood
memory. For me it was Grease, the play, and I was a teenager.

Ha! Funny. I loved that play. I saw it at least twice in the mid 70s.
I went to a lot of plays in those days. I could even afford orchestra
seats, they were $13.50.

Back in those days we traveled to New York City at least 3-4 times a year
and spent 3-5 days at a time. We would typically "show cram" on every
trip, seeing one show each night and occasionally a matinee' for a 2-show
day. Between Broadway shows/plays, good restaurants, shopping, etc., they
were very indulgent trips. All of that was far more affordable back then.
