I'm not kidding... I've got a 16 year old Shih-Zoodle and she decided last
week she wouldn't eat her dog food. So, I've been cooking for her trying to find something she'll eat. I decided damn the allergies I'm going to feed her what ever I can get her to eat. What's it going to do kill her? She's 16 and the no eating is going to get her sooner I think. She's been on a fish and potato diet for about 12 years. I've been microwaving a potato. Grinding it up with some tuna and a little garlic. She's been eating that until last night when she wouldn't touch it. I then chopped up a little bit of last nights dinner... Chicken Cacciatore with pasta and she ate that. Wondering if anyone in here makes food for their dog and has some ideas. Lynne |

One of my dogs is getting on in years and seemed to be having trouble with food that had been in the fridge so my wife started taking the food out of the fridge an hour or so ahead and let it warm up. He started eating again. |

Dad, who probably never EVER cooked a meal for my mom, would weekly make up batches of ground lamb (purchased from the les plus ultra tony David Berkeley in Sacramento), brown rice and grated carrots. After dad died, I prepared the dog food since my mother couldn't stand the smell of the lamb. That dog lived high on the sheep, so to speak for another 3 years after my dad passed! To the OP, I concur with whomever who said to get the dog to the vet post haste. Loss of appetite is a red flag. TammyM, misses Daddy AND Bandit |

I've been reading this thread in horror thinking I was the only one who thought the dog needed to be seen by a veterinarian. She has now, and that's all that matters, but for a while there, I kept seeing info on enticing food for dogs with nothing about what might be wrong that an elderly dog had stopped eating her regular diet for a week. When it didn't look like anyone had the same advice, I suggested that the original poster check with rec.pets.dogs.behavior. I knew 30 people there would tell her to take her dog to a vet-- and in considerably stronger language than I used. --Lia |

Had a 100 mastiff that I adopted when he was about 5 years old. Such a sweety... needed some training to live a completely different life with me. He was left outside to be wild with no manners. He was very smart, and with liverwurst he'd do anything I asked him. Thanks for the reminder! Lynne |

I did make sure most of the tomato sauce was off and she did fine. She's been eating the same dog food gladly for about 12-13 years and suddenly she acts like I'm trying to feed her a bowl of poop when I put it in front of her. I've tried hand feeding and she acts like I'm trying to give her a poison mushroom. It's the oddest things. I've never encountered this. This is my 3rd old doggie and the first 2 ate well all the way to the end. I like the canned food idea. I've never given her that I'll add that to the list of things to try. Lynne |

If she is dying, she may be dying in more pain than she needs to. If she's not dying, you need to know that too so you can care for her properly. --Lia |

If I had a dog that age who stopped eating for no apparent reason, I would take my dog to a vet for a thorough checkup including blood work. I don't have a dog, but I have an old cat who stopped eating and drinking three years ago. Turns out, she has a thyroid problem. Putting her on daily medicine caused her appetite to return and she started eating the same food she's always been served. |

Chicken innards, heart, liver, gizzard, (that little package of stuff inside of whole packaged chickens). Beef or lamb heart, kidneys. No tripe, too tough. Go lightly on the oil or none at all. A little water in the pan is better. Garlic is good. No salt. Place in hot (425), oven until cooked rare. Do not overcook. Your dog will love you. |

Add the meat to a pan and cover with just enough water to loosen - heat until all pink is gone, cool and feed to out dog. He said they don't need anything else. Dimitri |

I throw chicken thighs into the crock pot with some water and cook them up. When they are done cooking I shred the meat and put it back in the broth with some chopped carrots and rice and cook it until it is gruel-like. I don't season it much, I keep it pretty bland for her belly, but she eats that up pretty well and it really helps her belly. good luck. -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com I thought I was driving by Gettysburg once but it ends up I was just driving by your mom's house. |
