The weekend sale flyer from one of the big local chains came
yesterday. The front page says "Sweetest Day Savings!" The top left has a nice picture of a dozen roses, and right smack in the middle is the picture of asparagus!! What were they thinking? Of all the days of the year, Sweetest Day would be the last one I'd serve that. This is a 20 page flyer and they could have put chocolate or wine or anything other than asparagus on the front page. Someone should be fired! Sheesch. Lou |

Sweetest Day is a fake holiday to provide merchants with an extra day to guilt people into giving gifts. Gifts given because of commercial hype aren't worth giving or receiving. 2. Asparagus is a delicacy and lots healthier than chocolate. Fired? Get a grip. gloria p |

I agree with Gloria that I'd rather not get a gift just because some marketing boob says I so. That's what birthdays are for -- I can understand why everyone should celebrate my existance. ;-) > Ob. food: ever had an asparagus, tomato, and cheddar omelet? > > Mmm. If you use only the firm parts of the tomato it is best. I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes -- there, I said it! But I do love omelets, and the asparagus/cheddar part sounds divine... -- "Little Malice" is Jani in WA ~ mom, Trollop, novice cook ~ |

When I saw the flyer I laughed almost as hard. Holidays mean nothing to me. My post was meant to be humorous. But I see I didn't word it right or bring up a cat or something off topic so no one saw the humor. Oh Well Lou |

Actually... aren't they all really fake to someone-somewhere? > Gifts given because of commercial >hype aren't worth giving or receiving. Hummm... let me go back and see where I mentioned gifts.....OK, I can't find it. Can you? Last year sweetest day came and went and we laughed later when we saw the old flyer we'd missed. We've never exchanged gifts or even cards for this "faux" holiday. >2. Asparagus is a delicacy and lots healthier than chocolate. I love asparagus and eat chocolate maybe once or twice a year. But delicacy might be a stretch. >Fired? Get a grip. LOL I have a pretty good grip. How about you get a sense of humor. My point was that a billion dollar company made (IMO) an error in judgement in the placement of an item in a circular that cost them more than many people make in a lifetime. If you don't find it funny to see a dozen roses next to a veggie that's going to make you genitals stink even on a "faux" lovers holiday then I'm sure you're probably pretty boring in real life. Or you just don't care what you smell like. >gloria peeuuu Lou |

Sweetest day (from my experience) is mainly celebrated by young lovers. If you're interested you can read about the "day" http://www.theromantic.com/sweetestday.htm >That's what birthdays are for -- I can >understand why everyone should celebrate my existance. ;-) lol. Sweetest Day is a fake holiday to provide merchants with an extra day > to guilt people into giving gifts. Gifts given because of commercial > hype aren't worth giving or receiving. The first I'd ever heard of Sweetest Day was after we moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where it originated. Fake holiday? Perhaps, but its original intent was not altogdther with commercial interest... "Observed the 3rd Saturday in the month of October, Sweetest Day observance originated in Cleveland in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten. With the help of friends, he began to distribute candy and small gifts to the underprivileged. On the first Sweetest Day, movie star Ann Pennington presented 2,200 Cleveland newspaper boys with boxes of candy to express gratitude for their service to the public. Another popular movie star, Theda Bara, distributed 10,000 boxes of candy to people in Cleveland hospitals and also gave candy to all who came to watch her film in a local theater. Primarily a regional observance celebrated in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, Sweetest Day is gradually spreading to other areas of the country. People tend to take the Sweetest Day tradition with them when they move. Ohio is the top state for Sweetest Day sales, followed by Michigan and Illinois. Texas, California and Florida are among the top 10 states in sales." At some point in time following, American Greetings Company, headquartered in Cleveland, began producing the first Sweetest Day cards. > 2. Asparagus is a delicacy and lots healthier than chocolate. A local farm market now has asparagus at $1/lb. I bought several pounds last Saturday. > Fired? Get a grip. Yes, a bit extreme. :-) -- Wayne Boatwright __________________________________________________ 'Happy.' -Sanzip Raphael (1483-1520), Italian painter, last word |

I know you probably don't fry too often due to your d*mned healthy ways (lol) but have you ever tried doing catfish with a breading mix called Louisiana Fish Fry? It is very light, corn flour based instead of corn meal, so not gritty and the seasoning is really nice. Lots of garlic. Mmmm. |

That's basically how DH prefers it cooked, though I have never seen that particular item. Also, I bake it whole (skinned, of course!), with garlic powder, onion powder a little finely ground red pepper, and a little chili powder. Bake it until it's done, then broil it a bit to brown it. -L. |

What is nice about it is that the instructions call for simply washing the catfish filets and pressing them into the very fine mix, no dipping in egg. It is very light. They sell it in the seafood departments of the stores around here, in little low cases by the refrigerated case, and sometimes in the Cajun section. It is actually the lightest breading I have used. I am sure you could make it yourself with corn flour and spices. I ezpected Shelon to address this, but . . .
Depening on where the Sweetest Day dinner is expected to end - asparagus is one of the foods that flavour, how do I phrase it, various bodily fluids, both male and female. Each to his own. |
