Default I hate kitchen boo-boos!

Argh! I sliced into the side of my left middle finger Saturday,
using a dull knife (my first mistake) to cut up a green pepper.
And it still hurts and I can't type worth a damn. There, I've
whined it out of my system... ;-)

Awww.. I feel yer pain. I've typed for 5 weeks now with a broken wrist.
That, in itself is a long story, but I'll happily tell you if you want to
hear about it.

Don't you prefer red peppers to green?

Obviously, not dull enough. I keep one dull knife (easy to do, it's a
Henckels that won't hold an edge worth a damn) around for slicing
bananas and peeling/slicing apples.

We used to tease my Dad saying he wasn't allowed to handle a knife on
Sunday. It didn't matter what he was doing, if it was Sunday and a knife
was involved he'd cut himself. I gather Jani's "Sunday" is Saturday.

I was a teenager at the time Dad didn't do much cooking when he was
still in the service, in fact he spent most of his time at the O Club. Then
after he retired and quit drinking he started with the cooking thing... and
boy, knives on Sunday were not a good idea. He took the top half of his
thumb joint off. OUCH.

Jill,

So you're saying he was safer with a drink in one hand and a knife in the
other?? What's wrong with THAT picture? --JUST KIDDING!!!--

Oooh, dude! This is giving me the willies just reading about
it. You remind me of my Dad -- he won't go to the hospital unless
someone drags him there. :-)

Unfortunately, I've had a few nasty 2nd degree burns, although
my biggest one wasn't cooking related...

Hmmmm, you might have something there, Jill. And this might be a
good argument for getting Miguel to take over the Saturday dinner
thing. Don't get me wrong, I do like to cook, but as it's part of
my job as homemaker, I also like a day off once a week... :-)

You sound like my husband -- I swear, if I slathered myself in fried

I've still got the scar from cutting my middle finger to bone years ago.
I had burned the same hand the week before. The guy in the emergency
room made a comment about it, while looking at my boyfriend. I told him
I was getting married in a week and I'd been a little nervous lately...

Haven't cut anything off since, though.

LOL Andy! My first memory of my father was with him with a drink in his
hand but no, not a knife... I was probably 16 when he cut part of his thumb
off and he wasn't drinking then. I've since taken up his drinking for him

And!! I had to stand at the kitchen sink for about 20 minutes trying not

Hmm.. I'm gonna go meet my sweetness in about 9 days, so I'm not sure what
I'll slather myself with just yet. But, I'll get back to you.

He may reply himself.. I know he's in this group somewhere. <hint>

Oddest thing.. my other server wouldn't let me send this, so this is from
a different nntp server, and a different newsreader, but it's from the
same person.

Andy- just curious.. when I get your posts, there is a large black rectangle

I'm not, please tell me what it is and how I can get one, too. LOL!!!

Mandoline meets me.... about a month ago. I am not a kitchen klutz that's
what made it all the more shocking. I have 3 friends with the same
mandoline and all have cut themselves and refused to ever use it again. I
was the only one brave enough. It was a dumb accident as all probably
are.... big hunk of onion that wouldn't fit in the slicing hat. Normally, I
would just use it for something else, but this time I thought "Oh I can get
one more slice." That's all she wrote. Sliced off the side of my thumb.
The amount of blood and pain made me think I had taken my thumb off. I
wouldn't look at it. DH was at the grocery store. He's an RN, so I waited
for him to come home. Keeping pressure on it. For 3 days he changed the
dressings on it and I wouldn't look at it. He said it was bad. When I
finally could go without a dressing I looked. Not so bad... my thumb has a
minor scar and it's not deformed at all. There was definitely nothing to
stitch back on. My daughter thought she saw my thumb piece go down the
drain when she cleaned the cutting board.

Ouch! Hope it's healing ok....

My last boo-boo was about knocking myself out on the kitchen cabinets.
I have a pretty significant blind spot in my left eye. Normally my
right eye compensates, but if I have my head down and anything
approaches me from the upper left (or if I approach anything) I can't
see it. So I inevitably leave a cabinet open, turn to my left, and
BAM! hit my head so hard I about pass out. I have done it twice. The
cabinets are just at the right height for doing this.

The last time I gave blood the nurse kept asking if I was okay. I
told her that I had lost more blood cooking dinner. Last summer I
cut myself right to the bone on my left index finger. The next
afternoon when I meandered down to the ER to get it stitched the
nurse gave me a blast for not coming in the night before. I has a
leg of lamb on the BBQ and a bottle of wine open, and they were
more tempting that sitting in the ER for a few hours on a nice
summer night. They ended up not stitching it because it was too
late. I just kept it tightly bandaged and I think it healed better
than a similar booboo that was stitched.

If you think cuts are bad, wait until you get a nasty burn.

I had had two good sized Manhattans, which may have contributed to the
stupidity that inspired me to hold an avocado in my hand and whack it
with a knife. Neither of us was in condition to drive. I slapped a
bandage on it and lots of pressure. It didn't hurt and the bleeding was
contained, but I was amazed at how much blood there was to clean up.
Normally I would have gone to the hospital, but it was Sunday night, the
busiest time in an ER, and I had that nice leg of lamb on the bbq ready
to eat.

About 5-6 years ago I had back to back wok burns on my wrist. I had
pushed the chopped raw chicken into the hot wok with oil in it. Some of
the oil sprtized up and burned the inside of my wrist, second degree
burn about an inch by two inches. A week later I managed to do the same
thing again. There was a lesson to be learned, tip the thing away when
you dump the chicken in. I suppose I could not heat it up so much, but
the results would be inferior (but less painful).

<snip>

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks and gruesome stories!
I feel really silly complaining about this after hearing
about Kili's new condition, though... :-(
