Default Costco: it's all your fault

I decided I had to go to Costco because SOMEone here got me
in the mood for king crab legs. Got there, realized we had better get
something to eat because now I'm hungry. Normally, being the
princess that I am, Costco is not a dining destination for me.

Oh, I know, someone said something about a chicken bake.
Good a time as any to try that. Not bad at all, and I wrapped up
half to then drag all over the store. I'm sure no one minded the
scent of leftovers wafting everywhere I walked.

Ran into someone from work ... not someone I worked with, just
someone. Enough to stop, say hi, what's going on ... well, she
launched into this detailed story of her daughter's life as a Coast Guard
wife, blah blah blah ... I felt like I was getting those X shapes across
my eyes, and I was becoming frightened that she would never stop
talking! (laugh) Like someone put a quarter in her back and wound
her up. I didn't even know she had a daughter!

Whew. Got some stuff, not a whole lot, couldn't resist that enormous
tin of Danish butter cookies, hey. Got on line and there is a holdup.
Two people in front of me, all progress has ground to a halt. Woman
was paying with a debit card, she couldn't remember her PIN. They
cancelled her order, checked someone else through (more on her) and
she decided maybe she did remember it. They keyed in the entire order
for her AGAIN ... hello, can she not go to the back of the line?? ... and
the PIN wasn't right again! Call AGAIN for the key.

Gimme a break. The woman in front of me, she had no clue you were
supposed to put the stuff on the belt. They were telling her, take the
stuff out of the cart! She's looking at them like ... what? Lady, what is
wrong with you. Finally they started helping her. Crazy.

And, you know this is coming ... they didn't have any king crab legs.

My condolences. No seafood-only stores in town?

No, and I don't know of any seafood-only stores ... anywhere.
Around here, I mean. I'll make a pizza, instead. Picked up some
mozzarella, I happen to really like Costco motz.

Crab legs are a major profit thing for the regular supermarkets. I was at
our public/farmer's market two weeks back. Three seafood wholesalers have a
presence there. My son was making noise about crab legs. I bought snow crab
for $5.99 a pound. Two days later, I noticed the same kind at the
supermarket: $21.99 a pound. Probably came from the same wholesaler.

NO!!!!

I was thinking of going to the grocery store this morning (not for King Crab
Legs)... until I set foot outside this morning. Remember yesterday it was
70 degrees? Today I have logs blazing in the fire; it's only in the 40's!
Definitely not enough incentive for me to go running out to the store!
Today is perfect wrap up in front of a blazing fire day

Now, which stew recipe should I try? Hmmmmm. Oh crap, I don't have any
chuck roast!

Wow. You're right, that's some markup. I know of at least one seafood
co-op, but I don't know that I can just go there, not being a retailer. I
don't think they would have king or even snow crabs, even if. Still, the
place is only a ride up the river from the NYC fish market, I don't know if
it's still called Fulton.

At any rate, my best chance for seafood is really Whole Foods or Costco.
I mean that quality-wise.

I wonder what would happen if you walked into that co-op with business cards
saying you were a caterer. Tell them you're doing a little bash for The
Trump, out at Billy Joel's place in Montauk.

Here in SE Michigan, Costco sells ENORMOUS crab legs for just under $11
a pound, whereas the local grocery stores king crab legs, no matter
their per pound price, look like snow crabs in comparison.

Heh, actually, I thought I'd steam them in the roaster pan on my
long middle burner. Whatever, I would have figured it out when I
got them home ... which might happen next week, who knows.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do it! On Fridays and Saturdays
is when they have the special display of seafood. During the week you are
limited to what is in the case. Hope you have better luck next time.

At the Costco here, they run "seafood events" from Fri - Sun. Maybe
yours sells them on those days?

Heh, I didn't get a chance to answer Janet, but it seems I am the

My thoughts too. The Costco here ususally only sells the expensive
seafood on the weekend.

Try again on Friday. That's the day they have a special seafood
market in my area... maybe they do it in yours too. Who knows? Maybe
your Costco will offer king crab legs then.

Heh, apparently *everyone* knows that fact but me. Thanks,
everyone.

I'm hoping for a good 40F today but not sure it will happen. My ccat is
snuggling next to me and I'm looking for another blanket. I don't like
winter!

My Costco Checkout Mantra is, "You're saving Money, not Time. Lots of
Money."

(laugh!) I like that. I try to think of it as part of the Costco
amusement factor, look how many people have no idea you
need a current Costco membership to shop here. My
specialty, getting on that line, right behind them.

Truth be told, this Costco isn't so bad as far as long lines go,
all bets are off at Christmas or spring, of course.

I don't believe that I have ever gotten into a line at Costco where the cash
register tape magically needs to be changed by a new employee. That's my
speciality at a regular grocery store. And price checks -- at Costco the
person runs to check. At the regular grocery store the person wanders.

Heh, next time I'll take a look, see what's up with them. I sure
wish I knew about them when I had no oven for so long.
