Did you oil the gasket?

serene, who only has trouble with the pressure cooker when she forgets
to oil the gasket

I've never oiled the gaskets in my pressure cookers, and two of them are
over 20 years old and have the original gaskets (one of them *is* just
starting to deteriorate though) If you oil them with vegetable oil,
that can cause them to crack. I don't know if oiling with lard or
shortening is OK or not, but it is not necessary. HTH :-)

Sometimes just wetting the gasket (seal) with water is enough. When
my p/c was new, the seal was slightly oily with something. When it
finally dried out I would have problems sealing the lid. Now, I just
pass the lid under the faucet before using and it seals just fine.

I wet my gaskets with water before starting them up.

Why don't you just tickle your vent jiggler and your gaskets will
produce their own lube.
