There are two very alluring infomercials for food processors. One is
called Ultimate Chopper (I think). The other is the Quad Blade. Are
these as good as they look?
Is one better than the other?

I don't know. I ordered the Ultimate Chopper in mid-July. I got a
confirmation of the order on July 22, and itwas charged to my credit card on
August 8. After three e-mails and two phone calls, I am still waiting. This
time they promised it to me by October 6. If it is not here by then, I will
report it to my credit-card company as a fraudulent transaction.

Incidentally, when I finally got through to a company representative on the
phone, he just looked at my order records and said he would see that the
merchandise was sent out that day--no questions, no indication of why it had
not been sent already. Then he tried to sell me the blender attachment. When
I pointed out that I had ordered that and had been charged for it, his
answer was, "Oh, now I see it here." None of this sounds good to me.

Of course, it is entirely possible that this is a rare mix-up and that the
company is completely reliable. Mistakes do occur, after all. I will just
have to wait and see what happens.

I would be hesitant to buy an off brand product sold on an infomercial.
Eventually you will have to replace the bowl (they can break) or you may
want an extra bowl or lid. Knives become dull and disk carriers can break.
No matter how much or little you pay for the FP, if you can't get it
serviced or buy replacement parts then it will be useless. Good products
don't have to be sold by infomercials. If you want a decent FP for a
reasonable price then look at a Braun FP. Mine has worked great for 20
years and replacement parts and accessories are readily available.

I've never seen an advertised-on-TV food preparation product that was
good.

Why are they always made out of a silly plastic that gets scratched
and absorbs smells and is harder to wash? Why not glass?

Why are they always made with corners that you can never quite wash
properly, when smooth insides would be easier?

Why are they made with all-in-one plastic parts, instead of individual
convex parts that you can disassemble to wash easily?

Why do they come with so many features, when a device that just does
one or two things would be better? I don't want a blender with 15
speeds, I want one with 1 speed.

Why do they come with ten different blades? It makes me think that
none of the blades are really general enough. Will you end up washing
several different blades each time you cook? Why not chop with a
kitchen knife, where you get more control over size and it takes about
as long and it's easier to wash.

Why do they throw in something extra free, that's even worse than the
item you're actually buying, and which you're never going to use?

Not entirely true. When Braun began marketing their stick blender, they
had a infomercial for it. It's definitely a quality product, mine's been
going for 15 years now. Also, many people have sung the praises of the
Ronco rotisserie thing. I haven't personally used that.

I couldn't find any mention of the Ultimate Chopper's bowl size.
Looked kind of small to me. The ads promoted both blender and FP uses,
which isn't usually possible -- i.e., a blender doesn't dice, it
purees. The only real advantage I see is a blender with a shallow bowl
that it might be easier to dig things out of. The Quad Blade appears
to be a blender. Many brands and comparisons out there.

Amazon shows a cute little Santa Fe blender/chopper for $25 (+s&h)
that might suit your needs.

I don't know if it's the same, but I have a chopper that I bought for my
wife for Christmas last year. Is it the one that goes over the food and you
repeatedly press the handle down so that it chops the food while rotating
the blade to slice the next time on a different angle? If so, I've used it
a few times and it's great when you want to quicly chop up garlic, onions,
etc. And, the blade is way sharp...I've sliced my fingers open a few times
with it by accident while washing it...

By the time you pre-chop the food to fit the small bowl, you might as well
give it three more cuts and finish the job yourself.
Worthless.
