I eat corn across like a typwriter too, but most times I slice the
kernels off the cob... my cats love corn but can't eat corn on the
cob... so of course waste not, want not... I get to clean those
cobs.... then I toss those cobs out in my backyard, the deer eat them.

No, it's dried Indian Corn! It comes in decorator colors and is dry.
It's most often used for fall decorations. Quite a waste of good food,
but that's the breaks.

Ground, it makes wonderful corn meal for various things. I like to get
blue corn meal as I find it to be sweeter and you can also purchase blue
corn chips made from the colored corn:

We grew it when we lived in California and it can be eaten fresh when
it's very young. It has a sweet flavor but tends to be a bit tough.

However, I am just a bit sick of the way Americans attempt to get all
superior on the subject of Australian history, about which they are
usually signally ignorant. Anyone would think that the English never
transported convicts to Virginia. The loss of the American colonies
caused a bit of a problem in that regard for everybody concerned, but
the colonists at least solved it by importing more slaves from Africa
(they withstood the climate better and were easier to treat like animals).

However, let's get the story straight. "Australia" did not come into
existence until 1901 when the various colonies federated. The colony of
New South Wales was indeed originally a penal colony, as was Van
Deimen's Land. However, the free settlers started turning up almost
immediately and with the discovery of gold in the middle of the
nineteenth century there was no stopping them taking over. The colony
of South Australia was in fact founded by settlers who insisted on there
being no convicts from the start.

Transportation was abolished in the early 1860s, I don't offhand
remember the exact date, but of course there were old lags in the
community for the next sixty-odd years embarrassing the respectable
citizenry. Once they all died off convict ancestry then became
something to boast about, in some cases with justification.

Alleging that Australia was originally a penal colony and implying that
all Australians are therefore inclined to moral inferiority is about as
sensible as pointing out that the USA was originally an unauthorised
settlement by religious fanatics and implying that all Americans are
therefore blinkered religious bigots. Feel free to pick on Pete as much
as you like, but don't blame it on his nationality. Don't even blame it
on his being a bananabender, you'll offend Bronnie and Jane, who also
live in Queensland. Just put it down to his being an egregious dickhead.

I used to have a Labrador Retriever who liked corn though maybe
only as a vehicle for the butter. I used to hold the cob for him
and he went across like a type writer nibbling two rows at a
time. The same dog loved raspberries and I used to catch him

I happen to be very well versed on this subject, Christine, since John
McQuown and his son were arrested and "transported" to the Virginia colonies
in 1680 from Scotland to be sold into indentured servitude to a Virginia
planter. They were captured at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge.

Fortunuately for the family, the captain of the ship died and the man who
took his place changed the course of the ship and landed it at Amboy, New
Jersey. The port was subsequently renamed Perth Amboy because Perth is
where the ship set sail. (There's a Perth in Australia, too, eh?) Some of
the family settled in New Jersey but most made their way inland to
Pennsylvania and Ohio.

I may be an ass but that doesn't make Peter any less of one.

Well I'm not sure how being of convict descent yourself makes you well
versed in Australian history, but we are certainly agreed about Pete
(who has been pretty obnoxious lately in another thread).

Your family history is most interesting. I haven't the faintest what my
Scottish ancestors were doing in 1680! Dad's family arrived here in 1916
from Glasgow and Mum's in 1927 from Inverness.

Perth is the capital of Western Australia.

It just depends on my mood, and where I'm eating it. For instance, when
I get roasted corn at a fair, I eat around, because it's easier for me
that way. At home, I eat across the majority, then around the ends

My sister in law eats it on kernel at a time. Seriously. Takes her,
like, 2 hours to eat a single ear. It's devastatingly frustrating to
watch ;-)

I've got the perfect gum for this PeterL: It is called "Shut the Hell
Up!"...and on the front of the pack it says "How about a nice big pack
of Shut the Hell Up!". The top side says "Seriously" and the bottom
side says "No, Seriously"
