When they started back in the early to mid 70's, their schtick was the NYC
Subway theme. BMT was the old private company, Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit.
I dunno what it stands for now, Bite My Tongue probably.

My local Subway, in Labrador, which only opened a few years ago, is
wallpapered with the maps of the subway system so I'd guess they haven't
given up on the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit shtick and BMT still means that.

Biggest, meatiest, tastiest according to their website. Actually, the
website says "Some say BMT stands for biggest, meatiest, tastiest" so
really, it could mean anything.

Interestingly, the Cold Cut Trio uses turkey-based meats in the US and
pork-based meats in Canada. I wonder why that it...

That was the Independent, created by the city in the 20's(?) to add more
lines and compete with the IRT and the BMT. Unlike the other 2, the IND was
almost completely a true 'subway' all lines being underground.

Not true. I grew up living one block east of the IND *elevated* line at Quentin
Rd. and East 2nd St.... equidistant from the Ave. P and Kings Highway McDonald
Ave. stations, both about three stories above street level (I'd like to have a
penny for every one of those steps I traversed, I'd be wealthier than The
Donald)

The IND ran above ground (elevated) in Brooklyn along McDonald Ave. from Coney
Island (Stillwell Ave) until it dove underground after passing the 9th Ave
station and then running underground along 4th Ave. The IND ran underground
along 4th Ave. in Brooklyn towards the downtown section and then via tunnel
into Manahttan and underground through Manhattan uptown until it resurfaced
around 135th St and then ran above ground (elevated) again all the way into the
Bronx to 205th St. Grand Concourse... the IND being the longest run in distance
of all the lines, with about half it's length I'd guesstimate running above
ground.

Of course the IND no longer exists as such, with it's various parts now
redisignated and renamed (actually numbered):

Right, there was a 2nd generation of IND lines built after the 20's. The
original was underground except for a stretch over the Gowanus Canal. The
BMT and IRT went belly (tits to you) up in the 40's and everything was taken
over by the city anyway, although I do remember folks still referring to
lines as IND or IRT in the early 60's.

These old maps show what was elevated and underground:

Sounds like the D train, possibly the fastest, especially in its downtown
express form through Manhattan. But I thought that was completely
underground, even up to 205th. I was having illegal fun when I rode that
line, but I remember it being underground the whole way.

This site is a must for any subway fan: http://www.nycsubway.org/
