I live in Seattle and am throwing a dinner party tomorrow night. I need to
find dried bell pepper flakes. I have tried a number of grocery stores and some specialty shops. I don't have time to order from the web. Does anyone know who carries them? |

Now the day before a big dinner party in which friends are coming over to try this legendary lasagna recipe, I can't find any green bell pepper flakes. Though I am not oppose to changing the recipe, I was hoping to not have it be while everyone else will be trying it out. |

Wash, dry and dice the peppers to about twice the size you want to end up with. Lay them out in a single layer on a lightly sprayed baking sheet and turn your oven on to about 145F or a tad more. Shake the pan every hour or so for a few hours. Dried pepper flakes. Pastorio |

To dry bell peppers, remove the seeds and stem, cut into strips and place them into a 200 degree oven overnight. Dimitri |

I don't have time to order from the web. Penzey's: http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penze...llpeppers.html They have next-day shipping. If you hurry and give them a phone call before 10am, you may get them tomorrow morning. Never hurts to try. At the very least you'll have them for the next time. nb |

I accidentally drove past it yesterday (don't ask). You could give them a call... -- Jani in WA |

There's no reason whatsoever to use dehy bell pepper in lasagna as it will rehydrate anyway (but won't achieve full flavor due to the acid in tomato sauce - should be rehydrated in plain cold water prior to use), use fresh. Dehy bell pepper is very handy to have in the larder (for when you only need a small amount, or the one you thought you had has rotted) but in most instances is not better than fresh... powdered dehy bell pepper does make a nice garnish on omelets. According to the Penzeys link elsewhere in this thread, 2 tablespoons of dried rehydrates to 1/4 cup. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California, USA |
