My son is not quite 3 and he can name all sorts of things - apspargus,
parsnips, beets, cauliflower, to name a few. We name everything as
we go through the produce section. The funniest is hearing him say
"wootabaga".

On a local farm, back in August, on the back of a truck taking us to various
"pick your own" harvest fields, a young (7? year old) Asian boy casually
named all the fruits and vegetable plots as we passed by them, in various
stages of growth. I was totally impressed!!! With a small measure of
jealousy.

When I was a kid, with some minor exceptions, veggies came out of a can.

Canned veggies and fruit. Also, many other foods have fiber in them.

However, if you were a checker, it would be part of your
job, to know things. The meat is packaged so you're off the hook
there, but that's not the point.

You'd think just to avoid having to ask, the cashier would take a
spin around the produce section so they are familiar with the stock.

The checker today looked at my pile of stuff and said "These are beets,
aren't they? I've never seen anyone buy real beets before. Not that I'm
saying you're weird or anything. Usually they buy the canned."

no they won't, unless they are living in a rural or semi-rural
area where there are farmer's markets &/or their parents *buy*
fresh vegetables.
i live in an area with a lot of small vegetable farms, lots
of farm markets, etc.
my housemate's 8 year old daughter watched me shelling peas &
asked me what i was doing. i told her i was shelling peas. she
said" those aren't *peas*! everyone knows peas come in
blocks!"

yeah, that's why there's a table at the front end set up with
different veggies *with labels* and the sku/price. this is for
veggies like parsnips, cabbage(!), spinach, chard, etc. not
uncommon things like the Dragonfruit...
i can see not knowing dragonfruit, but asking about parsnips?
<sigh>

Agreed. And many of those charts have pictures.

Yep. I can't count the number of times I've been asked by the checker
what it is. It's one of the reasons most of today's produce sold in
supermarkets comes with identifying bags/ties/stickers.

I may have told this story before but it seems relevant.

Years ago, I knew a school teacher, He told me about going through the
cafetreria line on fish-stick day, watching a kid stare at his plate.
The kid said "I wonder what they looked like when they were alive"
