Hey all -- miss me? I'm kidding of course; with the traffic in
this froup, I'm barely a blip on the screen. But just in case
anyone was wondering "where'd that weird blond gal go?" -- on
Wednesday morning, I picked up a trojan. My hard drive is

I missed you! How did you pick up the trojan? Do you have anti-virus
software? I am wondering if I am protected against trojans.

Thank you!

I use AVG Anti-Virus, which is usually pretty good. It reported
a trojan called "win" something and said it needed to restart the
system to "heal" system. So I finished what I was doing and clicked
"ok"; now it keeps rebooting repeatedly. I'm annoyed, but I've been
wanting to format and reinstall everything for a while now; this is
just a good excuse... :-)

Thanks hon, I'll probably be done by Monday. I plan to spend
tomorrow making homemade frozen meals for my diet and reinstalling
software. Have a great weekend... :-)

Hey! I'm glad you're going to be able to fix it. This will
make me back up my system tomorrow. I've been putting
it off. And happy to see you, of course.

I hate it when that happens. Grrrrrrrrr. Reformatting is usually the best
way to go. We'll see you soon.

I bought a desktop hard drive for backup...
All the important stuff is already on there but I still have some stuff
that needs transferring.

I generally back up files as I go now whenever I make modifications.

So much easier than burning discs!

You and someone else keep saying "froup". Is that good or bad? I

At this point we don't know if it was an actual trojan or physical
damage or what. But there are a bunch of bad sectors on the drive
so we trashed it. Miguel says that sometimes physical damage can
mimic a virus or trojan -- I'm hoping that's the case so you and
others aren't affected.

Fortunately, I was able to back up my drive sans Windows onto our
Raid system (two mirrored 140GB drives). Each of us (me, Miguel,
and Buddy) had our own drives in seperate drawers, but Buddy had
messed his up with one of the Linux front ends (I don't remember
which one) and he's been sharing a drive with his dad. I took his
old one, formatted it, reinstalled my OS, and retrieved my stuff
from the back up. Voila! With a little tweaking, I was done by
Saturday afternoon, much faster than I'd anticipated. And I had
time to make some pork chops and dressing:

Baked Pork Chops with Dressing

6 pork chops; loin, center rib
3/4 C. butter or margarine, melted
3/4 C. chicken or vegetable broth
270g dry stuffing mix (I like Mrs. Cubbison)
1/2 C. celery, chopped
1/2 C. onion, chopped

Layer stuffing and chops in greased roasting pan. Cover & bake
at 350º F for 45 minutes. Uncover & bake 15 minutes more or until
top is golden brown and juice of pork is no long until thermometer
reads 160º F.

I make this when I'm counting calories -- I divide it into six
servings and freeze five of them, then reheat in the oven so the
dressing stays crunchy. Depending on the size of the chops, it comes
to about 600 kcals per meal. Much tastier than those premade frozen
entrees...

Thanks Nancy -- and I wish I had backed mine up more recently than
March! Still, it all turned out okay, see other thread... :-)

Jani,

Whatever, you should install:

Spybot Search & Destroy:

http://www.spybot.info/

AND Spywareblaster:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

AND TCPView:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...g/TcpView.mspx

AVG has it's share of critics.

Anything will have its share of critics! AVG Free anti-virus is virus
protection only - although I see they also have a separate, free,
anti-spyware program.

I'm a long time user of AdAware when I search for tracking cookies and
other bad things (they have plugins for the worst of the worst). I
picked up something yesterday that had firefox at a stand still. I
ran my AVG, but found nothing. Today, it occured to me that maybe it
wasn't a virus, so I ran AdAware and solved the problem immediately.

Wow, all? You're a ****ing *saint*. :-)

ObFood: NYT bread on the counter. Apple and peanut butter for snack.
Curried choy and onions for dinner. Really good red-curry tofu at the
Thai place near work for lunch. And a whole bag of honey-mustard
kettle chips (my latest compulsion) for breakfast.
