Default Christmas dinner 2006

The clan gathered. Bad stuf was remarked and endured. Good stuff was
remarked and celebrated.

This was my plate at dinner:
http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=2qw0yo6

That's cornbread dressing, turkey breast, Brussels sprouts, green
beans with garlic, cranberry chutney, a devilled egg, roast pork and a
vinaigrette of roasted jalapenos, mustard, Meyer lemon juice, and
olive oil. I ate some other things, but they're not in the
photograph.

This is the pork roast before I carved it:

I stuffed it with minced Meyer lemon. feta cheese, rosemary, minced
shallots, and salt and pepper. After I tied it back up, I rubbed the
outside with Dijon mustard and rosemary leaves. I cooked it on the
gas grill outside at my sister and brother-in-law's place.

Where's the okra?

(Alternatively, what have you done with the REAL modom?)

Looks like a great meal, and sounds like a pretty good time. Best holiday
wishes to you and yours.

The funny thing is that we didn't make gravy. I believe that was the
first Christmas dinner I ever had with my family where there was no
gravy. My sister made some of the meal; my mom other dishes; and I
made other things. We each thought the others had the gravy under
control. Nobody made it.

The pork was a hit, though.

Michael, I'm comin' to visit you before one of us croaks, I swear!
What's the nearest airiport?

We didn't have Christmas Dinner. I brought leftover ham from Rob's and
my Sunday night dinner, shrimps and bottled cocktail sauce, and the
leftover Zuppa Toscana with me here in Duluth. Beck and
WhatshisnamehisnameisJamie and Small Child arrived home before we
arrived here (they'd been at his family's in East Bumf**K, MN for
festivities there). They fixed meatballs in barbecue sauce
(commercially made meatballs, commercially made barbecue sauce) and
little smokies wrapped in bacon and baked, then glazed with a honey
mustard sauce thang that was damn good! We pigged on that and sugar --
cookies. I brought some of the Scandinavian Almond Bars that are
pictured on my dotmac blog and Girlchild LOVES them. I'm thinking that
we are going to do another iteration of them before heading home
tomorrow.

We did NOT have tourtiere (Praise Alex!) because I don't like making it
to start with and I figure we'll do it in a couple weeks when Chris
arrives from Tucson. (He asked if we were having tourtiere at Beck's
and I said we were not. "Good!!," said he.) I told him that the torch
is about to be passed to him. He's been helping me make it the last
couple years and I believe his apprenticeship is about to come to an
end. Yeay!!

After all the munching, we had ham sandwiches for supper. I don't think
any of us missed Christmas Dinner.

Let's visit him en masse! That would be you and me ... ;-)

Seriously. ChrisD is planning a major 'stravaganza cook-in at her
digs over Labor Day Weekend, 2007. I already have dibs on bed/floor
space at her house but you (and YOU, MODOM!) should come too.

It's gonna be a party for sure.

Ours was mostly southern Chinese, mostly mild flavors but a couple of
spicier accents and nothing clashed or dominated, which is sometimes a
problem for my bigger meal planning efforts.

All the ordinary prep work was done the day before or early that
morning. [A] indicates major preparation or pre-cooking done a day or
two ahead of time. [b] indicates store-bought.

We started with:
Bang bang chicken [A] (cold chicken salad with shredded cukes and
chili oil dressing)
Shrimp toast [A] (light curry flavor, deep fried)

Then I served Jade Soup (green and white, quite pretty)

Main dishes followed with bowls of steamed rice:
Chinese roast duck [b]
Cha siu [b]
Lion's head [A]
Shrimp and scallops with peapods, straw mushrooms, and fresh water
chestnuts
Beef with gai lan, shiitake mushrooms and oyster sauce
Sichuan style eggplant [A] (only because it is someone's favorite)

After the traditional pause (and smoke break) I served DanDan Noodles.
Then we finished with tangerines and key lime pie. -aem

DFW is about 2 hours away. Unless somebody else got smashed on I-30
or I-635.

Sounds like fun. A Cajun friend of mine went out for Chinese with his
Jewish friend. It's become a tradition with the two of them -- if
three years in a row can make it a tradition.
