I like this blog devoted to wine under $12:

http://quaffability.com/

They have categories for Trader Joes $6-12, Trader Joes under $6, and
TJ's over $12. There seem to be something like 41 wines reviewed in one
of those categories, more than thirty in another. They also review
non-TJ wines as well.

My local paper has a new column called "Wineaus" for people who like to
drink decent wine but aren't interested in the $18 a bottle stuff (or
$25 or $50). The blog above has lots more listings than the newspaper
does. I just like the term "wineau."

Sheldon, don't yell at me, I know you are so high-class you only drink
expensive wine. I like vin du pays and vin ordinaire, what can I say.
That blog is not for you.

Why care what Sheldon says about wine? He lives in new york state -
way out in the country. We drink wine everyday so vin ordinare is the
way to go and our quest is to find a vin ordinare that is vin
extraordinare. LOL!

Same here, but sometimes... the need to get the real deal comes! In this
same exact moment, 6 sparklers are sleeping in the trunk of my car, parked
here under: 2 Trento DOC (Ferrari), 2 Franciacorta (Contadi Castaldi and
Cavalleri), a low-end Prosecco from Foss Marai and a Champagne from
Roederer.
It's my favorite period of the year: everybody greets sparklers with a smile
and a "Wow!", even those "I don't drink" kinda people, and the temperature
in the car is just a little bit low but the wine is at serving temp in a
moment

Oh, I know Vilco.... but that's where DD's boyfriend comes in handy.
He's in the wine business and brings over some fantastic wines. He's
got a stash of Sea Smoke that would blow your socks off.

I checked a couple of tasting notes about that Pinot Noir, it sounds really
nice. And effective, too: 14.5 % alcohol.

Thanks, Leila. Rob likes wine and drinks it regularly * and I usually
pick something up at TJ when I go there. I'll check it out.

I've found New Zealand whites to be better in both price and quality
than many of the Aussie counterparts.

I.e.: Babich Sauvignon Blanc '06
Brancott Chardonnay '04
Brancroft Pinot Noir Reserve '04
All were AWESOME and very affordable.

Some major disappointments from Oz:
Hardy's (pretty much every variety -- bitter and/or over-harsh)
Alice White Merlot (no taste; focus grouped into mediocrity)
Banrock Shiraz -- sulfered with a sour finish
Penfolds Shiraz Bin 128 '03 ($2C @ considerable mark-up)
Seppelt Trafford Tawny Port (THE WORST port I've ever had... No
aroma, harsh and bitter.)

There have been _some_ that I've enjoyed from Oz but they're too
expensive to take so many chances on when compared to so many
positive tastes from the Kiwi wines.

Any chance you could post some of those listings for us occasionally?

There are some folks that like those wines, but I am not one of
them.... I will only drink them if there is absolutely nothing else.

Christine,

During a visit to Australia, we kept a cache of wine while in the outback
as often as we could. There were two kinds: turpentine and wine.

We drank a lot of "turps"!!!

It's not *that* great, Andy. It's two bucks (maybe more by this
time). It's drinkable, but nothing to rave about. He's just trying
to make you feel bad about flying the coup.

Nah... he's my best friend. We helped the personal computer age materialize

He's a whisky BUM.

It's definitely gone down the tubes from its orginal incarnation. But,
it's still as good as some wines costing three times as much. My
latest cheap wine experience was a bottle of Old Fart chard ($4) my
daughter picked up just for me.

The SF Chron came up with a list of the year's bargain wins today at:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...IG41N524T1.DTL
Don't know how many of these are nationaly distributed- they are
mostly imports.

Um, it would seem like plagiarizing. Why can't you visit the link on
the internet? I would feel weird reposting another blogger's posts. But
I'll print the names of some wines he just recommended, how about that?
(Trying to accommodate)

Latest wine: 2003 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon, "Two Vines"
Columbia Valley, $5.99

Sparkler: Schramsburg Mirabelle Brut, North Coast, $14.99

Another red: 2005 Concha Y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere. $6.99
at TJ's

Or maybe that's all you wanted. But you should really just visit the
blog, it's merely an internet web site, won't bite.

Good luck shopping at TJ's, and Happy New Year, all!

Leila

Actually I didn't mean from the blog. That is easy to get to, and
read.
However, Leila's local paper that had a column about affordable wines
is not easy to find, and those were the selections in which I was
interested, not the blog's selections.

All the Best in 2007. For the REST of the world, what is Trader
Joe's? A pawn shop, a restaurant, a cheap place to buy wine,
localised in one state in the USA, regional or ?

I assume that many non-USA readers don't have a clue what some
posters are referring to. Thanks.
