Do a Google on "spud gun" and you'll get the full story. They can be
fun, but they're not toys, by any means.

Default What's a potato gun?

hubby and eldest son built those for 'entertainment purposes' and took them
to Boy Scout Camp....uses canned hair spray, camp stove ignitor, PVC piping
and spuds.......makes a lot of noise and hurls a potato into the next
county.
Need instructions?

Hm... how to describe a potato gun -- it's sort of like a bazooka that
shoots potatoes - really. AKA "spud gun." I did a google search for
"potato gun" and there were over a million hits. There are also "pumkin
guns" too.

A potato Gun as I understand it from my youth... is a air powered
pistol...You push the barrel into a raw potato to load it. This breaks off
a small dowel like piece of potato which you can shoot. About 50 shots from
1 medium potato, before it gets too gnarly to find a good surface on the
potato to load from. No CO2 caridge is involved. The air pressure developed
is usually minor...barely enough to make the projectialed potato chunk fly
50 ft. I suspect fowl play. BB guns have way more power and accuracy. Safe
to use shooting at mom's favorite crystal.

There are a couple of kinds. One is a little plastic toy. The other is
pretty dangerous. Why do you ask? A look at rec.pyrotechics will tell
you about the dangerous one.

Heard on the radio scanner this morning:

The tinyurl link above is to a news story about a kid getting hurt
when a potato gun malfunctioned. I'd not heard of potato guns.

My immediate thought was that it is identical to a 'clam gun' - which is
what a shovel is called on the left coast.

I bought three of these potato guns for my husband, adult son, and
son-in-law for Christmas. Also wrapped up a potato that I gave them first
just to make them wonder. I've seen the other kind of potato guns, too,
that are made out of PVC pipe and actually shoot the whole potato. They can
be dangerous, but they sure look like fun. I also saw a modification of
this that is a type of flame thrower. Would be fun over a lake. Jane

Plenty of Google hits on:

diy flamethrower

PVC or SuperSoakers seem to be the foundation of choice.

It's a toy. Potato gun, sheesh!

Where I spent New Years Eve and New Years Day, they were using a WATERMELLON
gun. The barrel was about 20 feet long.

Sorry, I didn't take any pictures.

Was that near Pittsburgh? Perhaps near Carnegie Mellon? A *lot* of
school spirit up that way, I've heard.

When they perfect a watermelon gun that produces an air burst, spitting
the seeds for miles around, THEN it might be cool.

Or maybe a "daisy cutter" version that features a low-altitude burst,
planting the seeds over a defined "germination zone". Cooler still.

Or maybe a Claymore "pop-up" version? Now we're talkin'!

Those Carnegie Mellon people are mere amateurs if they haven't gotten on
these projects.

And how come no one's come up with a honeydew gun, anyway?

This one was used for distance. Or for shooting at the swamp buggies. See
how close you can get, but still miss. If you do hit the swamp buggy, *YOU*
drive next, and your "target" gets to aim for you.

My BIL takes a can of aerosol spray, a piece of pvc pipe, a spark plug
and an auto battery and a switch. He shoots it only outside, and over
a field with no human stuff downrange, and blows the potato out the
other end. This is not a toy, but someone forgot to tell the kid
that....

Stupid.

I suspect this guy had something more in line with what my BIL or
Ginny's DH used. Your's sound like a real kids' toy.

<eg>
IIRC, potato guns are louder than the watermellon gun. Maybe they just
built more "silencer" into the watermellon gun?

I recall a news story in which a forensic scientist examined a crime
scene, deduced what kind of weapon must have been used, and drew a
diagram of a rather novel weapon. Upon seeing the diagram, the
lead cop on the case said "That's a potato gun!!".

Can't remember where/when this was, other than long ago.

Carnegie Water Mellon Institute of Technology. The college of mellon
ballistics knowledge.

What a sight it would be, and just try to imagine the effect it would
have on pidgeons! Most shotguns would be instantly obsolete.

Bad on the audience's shins, though.

I think I've run into a prototype of that one just outside of town,
but beer was involved.

My wife has one of those. That's why I took out the trash this
morning.
