A video which portrays a few sick and frustrated freaks, doesn't stand
as the standard for killing pigs in the pork industry.

It's just amazing the way these hypocrites try to raise awareness of
animal suffering, without shedding an iota of evidence to human
suffering; the children dying of hunger and *Curable* diseases in
Africa, India, et cetera.

I'm sure these people, with their cotton candy lives, driving their
BMW's, and drinking California wine, would rather see a whale, a pig, a
chicken, or a mink saved, before 10 human children can be fed and healed.

What friggin quintessential hypocrisy!

What makes you say that?

>What friggin quintessential hypocrisy!

Not everyone who is concerned about animal suffering drives BMWs,
drinks California wine (?), or has a cotton candy life, and it's
certainly not hypocritical to be dismayed by bad treatment of animals.

I never see those animal lovers, concern themselves with the biggest
problem in our existence; human suffering--especially from situations in
which there are remedies.

It's just a simple misconception...

While beating the swine with a metal pole may look disturbing at first
glance, the farmer is actually helping to improve the quality of the
pork by tenderizing it..

Your argument makes no sense at all, and what criteria do you have to judge
standards?

The fact that an innocent animal life is being destroyed to tempt the taste
buds of an idiot like yourself

is the reason why such videos exist to increase peoples' awareness of animal
suffering and

butchery.

Standards are that morons like you and your ilk, care not about the
fact, that 1/3 of the world's population are suffering from hunger and
curable diseases.

To worry about the piggies and the whales, is trivial.

Well, that pretty much ruined my appetite for pork for the time being,
and I love pork chops, bacon and ham. I know that things like that are
bound to happen in all meat industries, and I'm sure if everyone knew
about it all, they would question eating meat altogether. Although such
animals are raised and intended to be eaten, I feel they deserve a little
more dignity and humane treatment while they are alive; just because they
are intended for slaughter from the day they are born, doesn't mean they
should be brutalized while they are alive. But, God gave me meat eating
teeth, and a natural appetite for meat, so I'll not convert to
vegetarianism. It's clear that these practices need to be changed, but I
can't foresee boycotting meat completely for life, so I'll stop buying
pork for now, and let publicity and legislation catch up to this, then
I'll consider buying it again.

Just my $0.02 opinion.

What is the human factor of mistreating animals?

Anyone who claims to abide the suffering of animals under the pretense
of concern for humans is truly a hypocrite, more concerned about
self-righteous judgement of others than human suffering. What is it
that you see when you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning?

Farm Sanctuary does some really good work along those lines.
http://www.farmsanctuary.org

They do promote a vegan lifestyle but are not in-your-face about it.
They are more focused on realistic legislation to prevent cruelty to
farm animals rather than impractical no-meat campaigning. For
example, they got 30 of NYC restaurants to sign a pledge not to use
white veal (i.e. from crated animals).

So send them $0.02 :>

What a bunch of friggin losers. PETA is a friggin cult, and these films
are probably shot by them, to *raise* awareness and make $$$ off the
idiots that follow this lame cause.

What reasons do normal pork farmers have, for killing pigs this way?

Like they hire trailer trash to do the killing for them?

Geez, how friggin ignorant and stupid can people be.

However, as the saying goes; there is a sucker born every minute.

Gary,

A few things...while they had video of this happening at this
particular factory farm, it by itself proves nothing. I'll bet nearly
every industry could find people that are just plain mean. The
difference? These folks are mean, and have the job of killing animals,
so they did it poorly.

Second, regardless of the PETA release date, a little research shows
that this incident happened about August 2001...according to the
criminal complaint. The manager was charged with 4 felony counts of
animal cruelty. He pleaded no contest, and is on supervised probation
awaiting sentencing (max 5 years +$500 per count...not enough I
suppose, but a start). He is no longer employed by Seaboard Farms. The
DA (this happened in Texas County, OK) is considering charges for the
other workers seen in the video.

Civil suit was brought by the Sierra Club, and was settled in January
of 2003 (the details of the settlement were not released).

And if you are willing to believe it, Seaboard Farms press releases
point out that as of June 2003, they were "setting a new industry
standard" by implementing 3rd party, unannounced inspections of their
facilities by Farm Animal Care Training and Auditing (FACTA) LLC.

So...disturbing to be sure, but this link a couple years too late to
be an immediate issue with that particular agency, who appears to be
cleaning up their act.

Bob

P.S. As you suggest, the right thing isn't to convert to
vegitarianism, it's to ensure that these farms manage their animals
properly.

I don't do PETA. They are all mentally disturbed people. If they had their
way, humans would cease to exist and let the plants and animals have the
planet.

BTW, years ago I read that plants also have nevous systems. When monitored,
the scream and cry when abused. The experiment was someone going in and
destroying some plants. When the same person entered the room, the plants
went spastic. Decades ago. Don't remember the reference.

So, if it were true, the veggies of the world are commiting just as heinous
a crime against another life form. Go PETA! Eliminate all human life by
starvation, including yourselves!

*I* never voiced support for PETA, as I know of the dirt on their hands, too.
Please don't lump *me* in with your generalized group, okay? Thanks.

Good points, and I agree. I was thinking in the back of my head that this
was probably an isolated incident anyway. I was feeling that that certainly
couldn't be the state of the industry across the board; it had to be an
exception. Also, I was sort of suspicious that no names or farms were
mentioned specifically.

But, I wasn't aware that that case was so old, and has already been
addressed appropriately. Thanks for that information. Information that PETA
should include on their site (as they remove that dated material). To
continue to maintain such a video, well after it has been corrected, it a
questionable tactic indeed. And, as I mentioned in another reply, I know of
the dirt on PETA's hands; they are NOT as pure and spotless as they want
people to think.

Again, thanks. I'll resume my pork consumption as if I never saw that.
(Boy, that's the shortest boycott *I* have ever done! ).

Indeed - but you know what, I find the bolt gun perfectly acceptable for
weeding out the runts. It's a production issue.

Oh PETA is well known for it's 'animals first' beliefs. Uh hello, human
beings are animals too. As to curable disease, members of the PETA
hierarchy have been quoted as saying that even if it brought about a
cure for something like cancer, they cannot condone using animals for
medical testing.

I'm having brined pork chops for dinner tomorrow. And know what, that
video didn't change my opinion one bit.

We're omnivores - some day the idiots at PETA will figure that out.

For this weekend, I'm planning to cook 2 pork shoulders, 6 racks of spare
ribs, a couple of chickens, 3 to 4 dozen chicken wings and a brisket. All
will be cooked over fire to as close to perfection as I can get.

I'm proud to be a member of P.E.T.A.

Virtually all beer contains a tiny percentage of aphid bodies (from the
hops), so they could rule that out, too. (You can hold an unopened beer up
to the light and see *things* floating around in it). Body soap kills
billions of bacteria (some, beneficial and symbiotic), so they could rule
that out. They could rule out anything to do with food, as that invariably
attracts flies, and lost of flies in an eating establishment are against
health codes. There are microscopic bugs on every floor, so they could rule
out walking because that will kill some. They must rule out any kind of
sweeping and vacuuming, as that will invariably harm dust mites. Likewise,
washing machines can't be allowed, as they, too, kill the tiny mites that
are on everyone (that eat dead skin).

Sheesh! It looks like if a true PETA freak has any influence on the place
whatsoever, it must remain VACANT!!! (They can't even tear it down!).

It's not at the house. It's a cook-in type cook-out. A bunch of us are
taking our ceramic cookers to a campground to share our cooking abilities and
also stuff ourselves with good food.

Ya ever notice, these PETA people never put their cameras down and try to stop
whatever supposed cruelty they are filming?
Nope, they just keep on filming, and when either all the animals are dead or
they run out of film, they leave to film another day.

Raising livestock as a food source is a huge inefficiency of resources. The
amount of grain used to feed livestock could feed many times the number of
people than the meat could feed. Livestock also consume huge amounts of
fresh water which is in short supply in many parts of the world. And the
pork industry, in particular, is a major producer of hazerdous waste.
Furthermore, many of the hungry people of the world couldn't afford to buy
meat even if you could get it to them easily (it must be refrigerated). It's
the meat eaters of the world who are contributing more to world hunger...

Most, if not all these problems could be turned against themselves and turned
into solutions, if only people would think. For example, pig waste can be used
to produce massive amounts of free methane (and is being used to do so in other
countries). Simply blaming the fact that man was designed as carnivores as well
as herbivores (omnivorous), is not a solution, but is part of the problem.

How come there's no PETV -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables?
A pig's got a fighting chance to run away, but a carrot's pretty much
stuck. Sure, the noise a carrot makes when under stress is too low
frequency for human ears to hear, but that doesn't make them any less
alive.

Vegetables are slaughtered by the ton each year. Cruelly uprooted, sometimes
decapitated, often eaten and cooked alive... They are frequently raised in
densely populated fields, and some are repeatedly doused with the feces of
cattle. Can you imagine?

You're a hypocrite if you pan the consumption of animals yet still support
the slaughter of vegatation. It's omnivory or autotrophy, anything else is
just a sad delusion.

(Incidentally, that's tongue and cheek, all).

I'll give you that methane could be extracted from animal waste (though far
less efficiently than extracting energy directly from grain, biomass, etc.),
but it still doesn't address the concerns of producing and transporting
enough food to feed the world's hungry.

It's arguable that humans were designed as omnivores. Some of the lastest
research indicates that the substance Neu5Gc in meat/dairy products may be
linked to diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The presence of these
molelules triggers an auto-immune response that causes systemic inflammation
and is thought to contribute to various diseases in the long term.

Read Malthus. Sounds to me like the problem is over population (whatever
happened to the zero-growth folks?) I will not lower the quality of my
life so we can stuff another few billion souls on this already
overburdoned planet.

I've lived a rather long and productive life. However I intentionally
didn't produce children so that we earthlings could afford to grow a few
more cows.
