Default HUGE Bell Peppers!

Our local supermarket has bell peppers the size of big grapefruits.
I don't go thru BPs very fast so anything above standard size doesn't
usually get used.
Anyone else seeing these giants? - Mike

I got some nice huge green ones on sale for .79 cents/lb a whiles back at
Treasure Island here in Chicago. This past week red ones were on sale for
$1.49/lb., these are kinda misshapen and runty. In any case they are diced
and go into the freezer for various uses...

I'm not a big fan of green bell peppers because they are so bitter to me
(raw especially), but they are indispensable for things like gumbo and
meatloaf...

For some things, the taste of the green bell pepper is essential for the
flavor of the dish. We've been getting the super large green ones for 48
cent each. Otherwise, the red ones go for about 2.49 - 2.69 a pound.
Sometimes during the winter we get lucky and we can get the red ones for .69
each.

Last winter my aforementioned Treasure Island had red bells on sale week
after week for as low as .99/lb, I virtually lived on them. This winter
they've been "thinner on the ground" The Asian places in town will have
them for a relatively decent price sometimes but then that's a trip up to
that part of town (Argyle St. on Chicawgo's North Side)...

I've read that so many times I have to wonder if it isn't one of
those cilantro type things ... green peppers do not taste bitter to
me and I can't believe when people say that. But, they do.

That's okay, more green peppers for me. You can have the
ripe ones.

nancy,

I love raw green bell peppers too. I love the aromatic flavor and they're
crunchier than celery without the strings. When I'm in full-tilt diet mode
I eat them for in-between meal snacks.

Bell peppers are also mandatory (medium chop) on pizza, imho.

I still use your recipe for stuffed peppers but I use hot Italian sausage
instead of beef. It's definitely stick to your ribs cuisine.

Andy,

I love any peppers also. If you ever find the banana peppers you and
I spoke of a few months ago try making a pepper, egg and cheese
sandwich. I used regular green ones for the picture below but they're
much better with the bananas.

Lou,

That looks rich and tasty!!!

I remember our discussion! I forget the recipe I was going to make now.
I did find "hot" banana peppers in the jars but I didn't want the heat.

From the OPs comment I was compelled to run over to the produce market to
find these jumbo bell peppers. No such luck.

You say that like it's a Bad Thing. Coffee is bitter. Beer is bitter.
Green bell peppers are bitter. I love them all.
