Many, many years ago, I tried several tins of whale meat (not the blubber).
Tasted like a very rich veal. Liked it very much. This was before the ban on
whale products.

I always assumed octopus was normal, and I did eat it many times per year
but it is now hard to find where I am. If I lived in the right area I
would probably eat gator too. Horse in another story for me I do eat
bear, buffalo, dear and such with semi regularity as well. It's not
uncommon to find emu meat in the grocery store, and I am making rabbit stew
tomorrow. I'm no stranger to the standard beef, chicken and pork either.

I eat both often. I'd put clams, mussels and oysters in the same catagory
as "strange" for some but common for others. I had a great smoked eel
dish about 2 weeks ago, yum!

Curried pumpkin soup in the winter is a must in my home.

This may not apply, but a number of years ago, I was with some Alaskan
friends on Xmas Eve, and we had reindeer for dinner!

I dion't know! I ate whale meat once during the second world war
and I still remember the unpleasant fishy taste. It was
reminiscent of the unsuccessful attempt to feed pigs fishmeal
that had the same result.

In the late 70's or early 80's, I was eating tofu. Weirded
most of my coworkers out, except for one Vietnam Vet
in management who recognized the stuff.

Otherwise, everything I eat is "normal." It's the things
the others eat that are weird!<g>

It is a matter of taste in many ways. Octopus is not strange to
a sushi or Greek food eater but I don't like the strong taste of
wild rabbit nor sushi using grilled eel.

Tofu is not "weird" to me but, IMHO, it has no taste whatsoever!

Those are great in a seafood salad. Add some cuttlefish and squid and you
have a meal

alligator. It tastes like chicken, dried out breast meat.

(Deep fried, at Atchafalaya Riverboat Cafe, in Houston Texas.
It was billed as an appetizer.)

It was a holiday season some years ago and we were invited to a
friends' place. Extremely nice people but not cooks. They served us,
among other things too ordinary to remember, a casserole they made of
canned green beans, canned cream of mushroom soup, canned fried onion
bits, and who knows what else. It was awful but they said it was a
tradition in their family. -aem

Okra isn't really fuzzy. Many do not like them because of the jelly like
texture after they are cooked. There is always huge bins full at the
grocery stores here, so I assume it's not too strange.

I think you've covered all the ingredients in the dish.

Goat, moose tenderloin, tiny octopi with their "twiddly bits"
(tentacles)attached, bison, peanutbutter stuffed jalapeno poppers (deep
fried), alligator, Rocky Mt. Oysters, periwinkles. I'm sure there are
more, but can't think of them.

Won't eat liver or other organ meats. Wierd taste, texture, and scary
trace elements housed therein.

I'd have to say pickled devils claws and prickly pear cactus apple jelly.
My aunt made the pickled devils claws and I made the cactus apple jelly.
The jelly was somewhat of a pain to make but it was really, really good.

Basically they're weeds. Here's a picture
http://www.naturesongs.com/vvplants/devilshorn.html They grow wild out here
and you pick the pods when they're green. When they're dried the pods have
two long claws on them.

The two most unusual things I have eaten are camel and ostrich.

This sounds like a good time to mention Ray Bruman's List of Weird and

You got to shoot them? We had to go out and club them. They are
delicious.

Thanks for the reminder! He's redesigned the site, IIRC, and while
it's less interesting on the home page, he seems to have catagorized
things now.

I used to catch them with a grabber -- a spring-loaded trap
contraption on the business end of a 10-foot aluminum pole. My father
and I would prowl the banks of creeks at night with spotlights
strapped to our heads. Bull frog bellies are white, so they'd shine
when the light hit them. It was great fun for a 10-year-old boy.

I don't really think of them as all that strange, but I suppose most
people do. Once we'd invited some friends over for dinner and one
guest called to check whether her salad idea was okay -- something
about the dressing or an ingredient that wasn't the usual course of
salad fixings here in Cow Hill.

D's answer was that I'd grilled frogs' legs to serve as an
appetizer/first course. The salad was instantly not an issue.

I guess the strangest dish I ever ate was a Korean shad roe soup. Or
maybe it was the jellyfish salad I had in a Vietnamese place in
Houston. I liked the jellyfish. The shad roe, not so much.
