Heavy snow in NY
I doubt that I'm alone in wondering how the hell people are managing.
I grew up in a place that had tons of snow, but, finally moved to San Diego, which has none. Has anyone heard from Sheldon? I worry about him. |

I worry about him. I'm perfectly fine, thank you. In fact there is no snow here near Albany, most is further west near the lakes. But if snow comes this way I'm ready... http://i16.tinypic.com/47cyu5w.jpg http://i14.tinypic.com/33ot95d.jpg http://i8.tinypic.com/3zkmrle.jpg Sheldon |

Are deer still able to jump it? |

They show people pushing snow shovels to clean off sidewalks and driveways. If you can; push the snow to clean a walk or a drive you don't have snow. It's when you have to start lifting and tossing the snow that you have real snow. |

From all I've read deer won't jump into a small confined space... they need a good running start in order to jump and dumb as they are they seem to be capable of knowing their own limitations, they know not to jump into a space where they won't be able to escape. And from my own observation deer can leap long distances but they don't get much height... in full run they easily leap 50-60 foot strides but no higher than 2-3 feet off the ground.... I'd guess they're moving like 100 feet per second. The books say white tail deer can run 30 mph but I think over short distances they can do nearly double that. From my house to the wood line is about 1,000 feet, when my neighbor's sheep dog suddenly appears those deer are gone in well under ten seconds... they can reach top speed like instantly. But deer can't leap straight up or even very high under full speed, so if a dumb one ever jumps into my garden she's trapped. My neighbor uses 4' turkey wire and no deer get into his garden. Sheldon ===================== Maybe I'll try it. I was concerned that once they were in, they'd panic and trash everything, just by rummaging around. But, without the fence, they're destroying all the vegetables except the short ones, which I cover with fence wire tunnels shaped like quonset huts. Pain in the ass. If I lived where I could shoot them, I'd own 4 freezers and they'd be the primary occupants. |

That only holds as long as it doesn't fall, I guess. A couple of weeks ago, we got about half an inch. That evening, the newscasts were crammed with LIVE reports of that "latest winter storm" with frantic reporters standing on snow-dusted sidewalks squawking about how terrible it all was. <and God help us all if they drive even an inch in it> |

I mean if it drizzles for more than an afternoon, or rains harder than a drizzle, it's suddenly "STORM WATCH: 2007!" All over the news! lol Speaking of rain...we're s'posed to get some soon, aren't we? As for the snowbound: Stay warm and safe and avoid going out when you don't have to. Keep us posted. kimberly |

LOL That is what I am talking about. If we have only 1/2 inch it is a none event. You don't even bother shovelling 1/2 inch of the stuff. |

I worry about him. My mother lives near the epicenter of the lake effect snow and is NOT amused. She has to shovel every time her dog (a basset hound) needs to go outside to accomplish bodily functions. This is reaching blizzard of 1966 proportions, when we got 9 feet of snow and had no school for 6 days. It makes the ice and snow we've had this winter in Seattle look pretty wimpy. Cindy -- C.J.
