Red Apple Rest condemned

By Hema Easley

SOUTHFIELDS, N.Y. - The town of Tuxedo has condemned the Red Apple
Rest, a landmark immortalized in films and in the memories of
vacationers who for decades stopped in on their way to the Catskills.

The condemnation came a few months after owner Peter Kourakos abruptly
closed the struggling restaurant on Route 17. He left notices on
windows that read "Went Away to Graduation and Vacation."

The once-beautiful, wooden building was dilapidated, with peeling red,
green and white paint, drafty windows and a caving roof, Tuxedo
Supervisor Peter Dolan said. The town building inspector advised that
it should be condemned, and Dolan agreed.

"The building was in poor shape," Dolan said. "We were scared the
building was potentially hazardous. Condemnation is not something we
do easily."

The building was condemned at a Town Board meeting Jan. 22. Kourakos
was notified beforehand by mail, but hadn't responded, Dolan said.

Yesterday, the signature red apple hung morosely in front of the
single-story building. The once-bright lights were dusty, and the
restaurant looked dark and dusty through stark windows.

A notice pasted on the door declared: "Condemned as dangerous and
unsafe" and "Danger. Keep Out."

Joseph Hann of Sloatsburg, who drives past the former eatery every day
to meet his mother, pulled up for old times' sake.

"This has been a landmark for ages. In the summertime, people came up
to eat," said Hann, a property manager. "I'd like to see it reopen."

Owner Peter Kourakos wasn't at home to discuss Red Apple Rest's
future. In the past, he has said it might or might not reopen.

Dolan said the eatery could reopen if Kourakos boarded the windows and
fixed the roof. The building, which stands on more than 8 acres,
cannot be sold until it is fixed, he said.

Has anyone heard anything about the status of the Munson Diner, moved
from New York City a couple of years ago and supposed to reopen in
Liberty NY?

When it came onto the market, cartoonist Bill Griffith
considered buying it to use as a studio. Griffith
frequently includes diners in his comic strips.

At about $35,000 the price was right, but moving it
to his home in Connecticut would have cost about
$100,000, which was too much.

You can view a list of diners for sale he

http://www.dinerMuseum.org/dinersfor...ersforsale.php

Some are quite reasonably priced, but when you
consider the moving cost, the cost of the diner
itself would usually be a small part of the total.
Unless you found one that is very close to where
you live. Most of these are on the East Coast.

Nevertheless, wouldn't it be cool to replace your
kitchen and dining room with an actual antique
diner? Think of the parties you could have.
Especially if you have kids. Hamburgers and
french fries for 20 would be no problem at all.
A nice 3-station Hamilton Beach malted mixer,
and you're all set to go.

That's because you're ignorant. Often entire towns disappear.
Happens often when the powers that be build a by-pass and then to add
insult to injury they build an Interstate... The Borscht Belt is no
longer... you would need to know the history. It's patently obvious,
Sqwertz, that to make such a statement you've never ventured further
than 1,000 yards from your front door, and you have the IQ of an
ameoba.

That's spelled . . . oh, never mind.
