Hi! My name is Gwen. I love to cook. My family and I are strict
vegetarian. Also try to use mostly organic/healthy stuff. We are
Americans living in Paris right now (our friends think we're nuts as
we don't eat cheese, butter etc - but hey - there's still wine!). I
am interested in participating in this Dinner Tonight thing. Is it
what I think - simply posting and maybe including a pictures of
whatever one makes for dinner any night?

Glad I found this!
Peace

Welcome Gwen!

We (try to) discuss/post about anything food-related here... some people
take pictures of their dishes and post links to them, some people post
recipes that they enjoyed, talk about how to cook what, etc., etc.

We also have a website if you are interested:

I think Barry is smitten by her charms.

Welcome, Gwen. That thread was the result of our virtual cook along
on the chat channel last weekend. If you have any favorite meals and
would like to post the pics, please do!

Could be! She seems very nice. However, she also lives in
Paris. Barry might see the opportunity for a little advancement
here. She's so charming and all. Gwen, watch your wallet.

You have picked the best city in the world for gourmet food and you are a
vegetarian? Wow, your resolve will be tested every single day. French chefs
are the best in the world. Good Luck! May I be so bold as to suggest a movie
not in keeping with your vegetarian lifestyle.

La Grande Bouffe

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070130/

Four successful middle-aged men Marcello, a pilot; Michel, a television
executive; Ugo, a chef; and, Philippe, a judge go to Philippe's villa to eat
themselves to death. After the first night, Marcello insists that women
should join them. Three prostitutes make it through a day or two; Andrea, a
local school teacher, stays to the end. The villa, the food, and a Bugati
roadster are essential props

I have a sick sense of humor so take anything you see from me with a grain
of salt.

Welcome to the group! You'll need to bring some asbestos underwear, there
is liable to be some flaming going on. Ignore it and learn to use your
killfile. But give most of the folks a chance first.

I do have a question. I thought it was *vegans* who didn't eat dairy and
that vegetarians were more liberal with things like butter and cheeses. I
was confused about that when I joined this newsgroup almost 10 years ago and
that's how it was explained to me. Anyway, welcome! Hopefully some of our
carnivore ways won't turn you off.

A lot of people here take photos of their food and post links to it. This
is a text-only newsgroup; binary groups are where you can post actual
photos. So here you'd need to upload your photos to a site and then post a
link so people view them. Just an FYI in case you didn't know.

OR. . . up load them to alt.binaries.food (if your news server carries it).

Good point, Van. Not everyone's ISP carries binary groups but if they are
available then just point the way here to a photo there

This is a text-only newsgroup; do not post pictures here. Heed that,
please. There are other places to do that, including alt.food-binaries.
I think the dinner thing started as a way to inject more topical posts *
the group's pretty much gone to hell with off-topic stuff. Personally,
I don't need to know what you had for dinner if that's all you're going
to say about it. It's nice to know the recipe and procedures, though.

Welcome to the fray. Don't forget to bottom post and if you just HAVE
to ask about a computer application, political scam or scandal, or
anything else non-cooking related, please try to resist the temptation
to ask here. There are Usenet groups for dang near anything and
everything and the people who are regulars in *those* groups are usually
quite happy to provide assistance, especially if you grovel a little and
ask nicely. There are about 15 rec.food* groups that specialize in a
number of topics, including equipment, restaurants, and baking.

You might also want to check out the r.f.c FAQ file -- Victor Sack
regularly posts a pointer. And there's no sense to fuss about the foul
language you'll encounter here, either. It won't change anything or
anyone and will only serve to annoy you.

You might also consider using a dedicated newsreader software
application and use a newsserver to get your posts, instead of google.
There are newsgroups that can advise you on those, too. The advantage
of a dedicated newsreader is that you can learn to use a killfile so you
won't even *see* the annoying posters.

OB Food: Here's something from a long-ago poster here. You'd like it
more if it didn't involve meat. Sorry 'bout that.

Oh, and when you've filled out the membership application, you can send
your first year's dues and initiation fee to me (non-refundable) and
we'll let you know what The Cabal (TINC) decides about you.

Mimi's Sticky Chicken

Recipe By: Mimi Hiller, posted to r.f.cooking by Damsel 5/28/05
Serving Size: 4
Preparation Time: 5:15
Categories: Meats

2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon paprika
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 whole roasting chicken about 3 pounds
1 cup onions chopped

Combine all spices (first 8 ingredients) in small bowl. Rinse
chicken, inside and out. Drain well. Rub spice mixture over skin and
the inside of chicken. Place in a resealable plastic bag, seal and
refrigerate overnight.

When ready to roast, stuff cavity with onions. Place chicken breast
side down in roasting pan. Roast uncovered at 250ºF (that's not a
typo...it's really 250º! Anything over 225º is safe as long as the
chicken reaches an internal temperature of at least 155º, which this
does, and more) for about 5 hours. Baste occasionally with pan juices
or until pan juices start to caramelize on bottom of pan and chicken is
golden brown.

I don't know if it was already mentioned in this thread, but one such
newsgroup to post pictures of food is alt.binaries.food. It was revived from
death by members of alt.food.barbecue, and is now well used with a good
quantity of daily food-related posts and photos.

I don't know if the OP will have access to a.b.f. Dave. She was posting
thru Google, and they don't carry the binaries...

She's posting from Google, so that's not a concern.

Not for her. The image services work for anyone though.

Nope. No need to crosspost. You use this method too, so why not
share? Post binaries to a text group without being out of news group
compliance..... by posting a URL

to do it - use anything like
imageshack.com/
tinypic.com
tinylink.com

or use web based albums like
photos.yahoo.com/
picasa.com
