She's about.

Check ba.food or sdnet.eats for her latest.

Thanks for asking, Cathy!

My computer died a sudden and horrible death, and then my new Vista
(*ptui*) machine gave me shit when I tried to install my preferred
newsreader. But I'm here, trying to catch up. It may be a losing
battle.

ObFood: Huevos rancheros for breakfast; shrimp and broccoli sauteed
in butter and garlic with onions, served over wheatberries for lunch.

Hmm. I'm due to buy a new 'puter (the current one was new
in 1999) and was assuming I'd get Vista on it as it's the
latest thing. Maybe I should back down from that idea.

I've had nothing but trouble with it, even in a house with a pretty
competent geek, who now says he will never get a Vista machine so
long as he lives.

For what it's worth, Guy also got a new machine this week, and he
went to Fry's and was able to get a machine with XP on it. He's
happy with it. (Also with his HUGEmongous new flatscreen.)

Hmmmmm, I've been hearing that about Vista.

A mate sent me this link...

Limited choices for Windows XP holdouts

If you're hesitant about making the leap to Windows Vista, expect a
hassle trying to find an XP computer on store shelves.

Despite words of caution from some in the tech industry that it's too
early to make the switch to Microsoft's Windows Vista, many PC shoppers
have no choice.

The PC industry has moved almost everything they sell to consumers--and
some businesses--over to Vista, both in stores and online.

I think I'll have to buy another copy of XP while I can and hold onto
it!!

Nah. XP boxes are still available, and he runs a Linux box, as well.
He's not as dependent on Vista as some of us may be.

(I also do Macs, so I'm not technically dependent, either, but my
boss bought this machine for me, and he wanted me to get a cheap
machine Right Now -- so I bought what I could find. I wish I'd had
time to look harder.)

I've heard for decades that the money should go into the monitor. I
have a 22". How big is his?

Cool. I notice Central Computers is also still selling XP (on all
its AMD machines, and Intel machines except for the high-end
ones).

Monitors are getting cheaper and cheaper.

About that, I'd guess, but I'm not sure.

No clue, but Linux is free, so you could install it on any machine
you buy. In fact, the computer that died on me probably just needs
a new power supply, and James is gonna turn it into a Linux webserver.

Shh! I don't want to hurt rfc's feelings. ;-)

ObFood: Carol's birthday party tonight. Ate about a metric ton of
food, a nibble at a time. Lots of yummy stuff. My contributions
were New York Times bread, wheatberry salad with roasted carrots and
tofu, stuffed mushrooms, and little sweet peppers stuffed with pesto
goat cheese (made the pesto goat cheese by mixing goat cheese with
those little frozen cubes of garlic and basil that I reckon you get
a Trader Joe's or something -- found them in Carol's freezer and
glommed onto them).

Oh Serene, you are one of my beloved posters, at least of as now. You
can't hurt my feelings..not at all....
I just adore your food posts, even though many of your things go
against what I would cook.. But who cares.

Keep on posting your wonderful Berkeley and environs posts. It makes
me very homesick... But keep on, no matter what.... It is what life is
about....
