Ok, a little background. As many here may know, I am diabetic. Last week as I sat
down to breakfast Thursday morning, I was stricken quite out of the blue with some pretty bad stomach cramps. Not the usual, abdominally located stuff, but up high, between the ribs. They continued intermittently all day and the next day. Friday we went to an early dinner with friends. I hadn't had any pain in several hours, and thought it had passed. Then during dinner they hit again with a new ferocity. By that night I was quite sick and unable to keep down anything at all. All the next day the same thing. By Sunday morning, I was able to keep down small sips of Sprite and water. Decided to try breakfast. Had a waffle, which I hate less than half of, and some tea. Felt a bit better so decided last evening to try dinner. Around the third bite, I had the distinct feeling I had been too ambitious. This morning, I lost last nights dinner. All day, stomach cramps and so much noise! Gurgling and such. I've never experienced anything quite like this. Nausea and throwing up, I'm quite familiar with. Spent 18 months (pregnancies) doing that all day, every day. This is somewhat different, with the high cramps and all the noise. Does this sound like food poisoning? Or a stomach virus? I'm trying to stay hydrated, and am keeping down liquids. Ate a small amount of macaroni noodles this afternoon, and so far they've stayed down too. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I am afraid to check my blood sugars...between sipping sprite and being unable to keep down the meds, I'm sure they're out of whack. I have an appointment Wednesday (the soonest they could get me in...apparently they've been bombarded with sick people the last couple weeks), but was hoping to find some form of relief before then.... kimberly |

Seems to me instead of worrying what to eat you should be seeking medical intervention... by some remote chance have you thought to call your doctor? Sheldon |

It's bad enough there's an entire generation who can't use apostrophes correctly. |

Again, for those with a functioning brain, for someone with a pre-existing condition who prefaces with "I'm a diabetic" it was time to seek medical attention a few days ago... ERs are open 24/7. And your intelligent suggestion is... oh, nothing but to lay there while waiting to die.... it would suck to be your child. Sheldon |

My health food fanatic sister in law was always pushing that stuff, and I was always resistant to any of her suggestions. then one time I had a nasty stomach problem. I hd tried everything, but nothing would stay down long enough to work. I would have trouble keeping straight vinegar down at the best of times, but I was desperate. I poured about an ounce of apple cider vinegar into a glass and knocked it back. It tried to come back up but kept it down. Within minutes I was feeling better. |

Yes, I know of at least eight people that have had it in the past couple of months. When my wife got it, she spent 6 days in the hospital. Seems like there is no cure other than wait it out, generally 24 to 48 hours for the major portion. |

If you are weakened for some reason or have other conditions there may be other medical problems as a secondary situation and you should be checked out. My wife has CHF and this put her in the hospital for 6 days, another elderly couple was severely dehydrated and ended up in the hospital. In once case I know if the woman went to her doctor but found he was not in because he was home with it himself. |

Every recommendation I've ever heard is the brat diet, tea and carbs. Is fasting out for diabetics? Sometimes, you have to starve the darned virus for a day or so, sucking on ice cubes, or sipping tea until things quiet down. What about electrolyte drinks? If your doctor is anything like mine, they will schedule you for a day or so past the usual lifetime of the illness, since there's really not much they can do but offer sympathy and palliatives. Best advice is to curl up in bed with a good book, and sleep as much as possible. And keep a bucket with a lid by the bed, just in case.... maxine in ri |

Oh, and plain dry toast or plain pasta, maybe in some (not highly spiced) broth. It works (mostly). Plenty of liquid; if Sprite works or ginger ale, fine (if it doesn't interfere with your diabetes) but definitely water and a plain broth. I remember a time I came down with a rather nasty case of the flu and the nurse called to tell me the doctor had called in sick. Sounded rather ironic but I'm surprised it hadn't happened at least once in previous years; after all, they are around sick (contagious) people all day. Hope you feel better soon! Jill |

Metformin has some nasty gastric side effects - if you've just started it, or changed your dosage, that might be a culprit. Or maybe a new combination of meds. Any change might be causing the effect. And if the only thing you've been consuming is Sprite, your blood sugar will probably NOT be as nearly as out of whack as you think, because you haven't been eating anything else. And most oral diabetes meds take several weeks to get into your system when you first start them, so they also take several weeks to get out of your system when you stop them. So skipping a day or two won't throw your blood sugar totally out of whack, either. However, being sick =can= raise blood sugars. As a diabetic (are you relatively newly diagnosed?) you can NOT take the "wait and see" attitude with illness. If it lasts more than 24 hours call your doctor. If it's a weekend, get to an ER. You just can't think like a non-diabetic person anymore. It's just not worth it. Cathy |

Women present very differently (than men) when suffering a heart attack, and what you've described qualifies! Definitely seek medical attention -- the sooner the better, even if it means the ER. Pain after eating is a huge symptom - and the pain for me was intense, high and a bit to my right between my ribs. I never had any symptoms until I had a biliary obstruction which didn't resolve so I had to have emergency surgery. Get the to a doctor, pronto. -L. -L. |

Sounds like mild food poisoning to me. I have had a couple varieties, so I
know. I am also diabetic and on metformin. Metformin can cause your symptoms, especially if you eat a lot of carbs. There is no such thing as stomach flu or a stomach virus. You can get severe diarrhea from a simple cold, so you are confusing a symptom for a disease. Many things could cause this, even stress. Almost all are benign and the treatment usually is to just let it run its course. If you had a pathogen such as salmonella, you'd be wishing you were dead. I've had it and I can tell you there is nothing so violent and painful as severe food poisoning. If you are not passing blood in your stools, you do not have salmonella or anything so severe. A mild case of e coli in an adult can cause your symptoms. E.coli in an adult can be mild or extremely severe. If it were severe you'd have a high fever and bloody stools. Or you could be having a case of the metformin trots. I get them often. Real food poisoning is so painful you'd not be able to compose a message to this group. When I had salmonella I literally lived in my bathroom for 3 days and nights, praying for death. Then 3 more days in bed sipping broth and Gatorade still worried death would not come and relieve me from my suffering. My anus never really healed, 'roids and fissures have plagued me since. OK, TMI but it is important in your case. So if you had a really bad form of poisoning, you'd know it. So see your doc and be assured you will live through it until then. Um, didn't someone suggest that way back at the beginning of this thread? And btw, there is no such animal as a stomach flu, as in influenza... what's commonly refered to as stomach flu is actually food poisoning. From the OP's symptoms I seriously doubt she has a "stomach flu", her symptoms are lasting way too long. She needs to see a medical doctor, especially with her prexisting diabetes. http://children.webmd.aol.com/tc/Nor...Topic-Overview http://www.medicinenet.com/gastroenteritis/article.htm Sheldon |

Top posting to be sure you read it....Please do check your blood
sugar. If you drop too low, you'll have even more problems.. Try Gravol when you need to take your meds. Meds and testing are verrry important. You can always adjust your sugar intake with honey or plain granulated sugar if you are low...... If you test high, unsweetened ginger ale...hope you're feeling better soon.....Sharon, also diabetic. Over the next day, I developed the WORST cramps. It felt like a huge bubble, and was quite uncomfortable. Things were moving, but the evil bubble remained. It remained there for over a week. I believe I had the flu- I was so weak that I couldn't pick up my 2 month old son. It sounds like you are experiencing something like I did. I hope you feel better soon! |

In article >,
"Nexis" > wrote: > Ok, a little background. As many here may know, I am diabetic. It's probably just one of those Norwalk type viruses or some other temporary thing.... hopefully. But if you have not been screened for celiac sprue, you should be because you are diabetic and there is an increasingly strong correlation between the two auto-immune conditions. Celiac used to be considered a rare condition in the US but is rapidly approaching an incidence near 1 out of 100 people. The incidence is even higher in people with diabetes or other auto-immune conditions. Screening, though not foolproof, consists of blood work and should include a TTG or tissue transglutaminase. A positive screening result would require further tests to confirm. American physicians are notorious for either not recognizing, not screening for, or misdiagnosing the condition. Hopefully that is not what you have. Perchance, have you stopped smoking in the last year or so or have you recently been on a low carb diet? With celiac, the body has an immune reaction to gliadin proteins contained in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats. It is a toxic (as in poison) rather than typical allergic reaction. The small intestine can suffer major damage causing symptoms similar to yours (and more) over a long period of time. It is not a temporary condition and can "activate" anywhere from infancy to old age. In addition, anywhere from 5 to 10% of the population has become gluten intolerant for some reason and the incidence of wheat allergy is also on the rise. One wonders about the sudden rise in these wheat related problems. And that concludes my little PSA on celiac. I hope your symptoms are temporary and that you get well soon. There is a very nasty virus that is going around that people often incorrectly call a flu, but it is not. It runs its course in about 3 days. Symptoms are like food poisoning, but it is not that either. |

Sometimes they're right, sometimes the one they thought would be an epidemic isn't.... probably because so many people inoculated themselves against it. However, there isn't a way to research that possibility, so we decide they were duds at guessing that year. I've been very lucky with flu shots so far. I might feel "under the weather" (no fever or vomiting) at some point, but I don't get so sick I have to stay home in bed. <knock on wood> Also, during this flu season - be your own advocate. Someone told me yesterday that she took her teenager to the doctor and ER (twice) with a severe "stomach ache" and was sent home with instructions about how to care for the flu both times. The third time mom insisted on a CAT scan. It turned out his appendix had ruptured. Long story short, he's lucky to be alive and may have to undergo another operation if they didn't find all the "gunk". -- See return address to reply by email |
