Default Camping Condiments

After 15+ years of tents, we bought our first camping trailer last
week. This weekend we've been busily putting all our gear in it and
I'm making up a small box of the usual campout condiments, but I
feel like I'm forgetting something. I've got ketchup, mustard,
steak sauce, salad dressing, and mayo. Any ideas? TIA... :-)

Garlic powder, lemon pepper, ground chipotle pepper, maybe a small
bottle of soy sauce and another of tabasco. Ooh. And cinnamon.

Er, Salt & Pepper?

The one time we rented a cabin, I decided to figure out what we'd need
for the week. Made up a list, included recipes (glutton for
punishment, cooking on a hotplate and campfire). Packed all my tiny
jars with the condiments that go with the recipes, and it worked! The
only thing we forgot were matches....

Someone in here recommended this site a year or so ago for travel-sized
portions: http://www.minimus.biz/.

Bring all those little condiment packets that are spilling out of your
junk drawer:

soy sauce
Chinese mustard
barbecue sauce
Arby sauce
Horsey sauce
Taco Bell hot sauce
malt vinegar from Long John Silver's
catsup
mustard
honey
red pepper flakes
jelly

Then you can blithely toss whatever you don't use on the trip.

Agreed - especially for travel camping. Somewhere, someday, you'll be
delayed and miss the local grocery store and have to have an
inconviences store supper. Those cans of Dinty Moore are a lot more
palatable with a shot of Tabasco or Franks (or even a squirt of Taco
Bell Hot sauce.)

Oh, and be sure to check that the steps on the trailer are folded up
before you hit the road - every time. They play havoc with we touring
cyclists.

Happy Trails.

Hi Jani

We camp in a high top camper van, so have to conserve space too. I
usually go through my spices and match them with my meal plan. We don't
carry anything we don't need, but this summer we will be touring western
Canada (our son lives in Edmonton Alberta and we're in Ontario), so we
will need to pack more 'stuff'. I will begin to make my packing list
this week, in detail. When doing short term trips, I plan meals in
advance, but when we travel long term, we shop every couple of days
along the way. I like to be prepared for whatever we find in the
grocery stores. I carry a slow cooker or high top electric fry pan,
toaster, coffee pot, tea kettle, microwave, basic pots and pans and
utensils. We use a two burner hot plate, since we don't have propane on
board. We have a nice little fridge, but almost no freezer space.

I'm going to make up a basic spice mixture this week and try it out
on various dishes in the next couple of months. I have shaker bottles
that I got from Dollarama at 2 for. I'll use these for spices, and
snack size siplock bags for my dried herbs. Bags really pack well in
very little space. We don't eat in restaurants very often because of
budget constraints. We'd rather have more cash to tour, than to eat
out.

It might help to make up a master list to store on your computer so
you can print out a checklist each time you get ready to go. I hope you
enjoy your camper trailer as much as we enjoy our van. We've done the
tent, pop-up, travel trailer and both kinds of motor homes, but have had
to downsize since we retired. Happy trails.....Sharon

Some general info re camping...

When Husband and I did our first long camping "road trip" a few years
ago, we were tent camping and driving a pick-up. Not much room, so I
had to be extra careful about what we brought.

I googled "camping checklist" and got about 14 million hits. I read
through a bunch of the links, and every time I saw some necessity that
was not on my checklist, I added it. My checklist is an Excel
spreadsheet - I still have it and use it every year.

One thing I would never have thought of was a cutting board.

Heh, I don't have that much room, BOB! Seriously though, thanks
to everyone for the suggestions, you definitely reminded me of
many things we would have missed. I appreciate the help, as
always... :-)

So, when are you taking off for your first trip? Today would be a good

Not until we get back from California -- we're going to be at
Disneyland most of next week. That's a "fly in and stay at a hotel
thing", although we may take the trailer in the future. Here's a
link to the one we just bought, btw, if anyone is interested:

Ours is the Santa Fe -- it's the perfect size to haul with my Ford
Escape. In any case, I think we're going to go on our first trip on
the weekend of March 23-25.

Especially after that snow last week! What the heck was that
all about? Winter's last gasp, I guess. Or I should say, "I
hope"... ;-)

My ex & I bought one of those back in '96- brand new. It even had a
shower in it. It was easy to tow, and easy to set up. I do remember my
husband having trouble with the feet that drop down. You may want to
bring along a couple of jacks. It was a great investment, and we used
it alot. Hope you have fun, and don't miss "Soaring Over California"
when you're in D.L.

With the trailer? Thanks, I think we will -- it's something we've
wanted for a long time now. And it's going to be a nice bonding
experience with Buddy (DS - 9). He's very excited. We're going with
another couple who have a daughter his age -- we hang out with them
a lot and have been on vacation together, so I think this will be
an excellent trip... :-)

When I go camping, my cutting board is a paper plate. As long as there
is a substantial table at the site, it works OK. Easy clean up.
