Just curious but do you use a toaster oven?

If so how often?

And do you prefer a certain make of a toaster oven?
I have a Black & Decker.

Thank you.

Sure do! It's an Oster convection/toaster oven and I really do like
it and it's used about 4 or 5 times a week.

Yes. We don't have a regular toaster.

Nah, we just bought a cheap one. It works fine.

I use my toaster oven daily. Toast my english muffin in the morning,
and since the broiler on my oven doesn't work, I often broil steaks,
chicken or the occasional piece of salmon. It works amazingly well. I
also bake in it, cookies and brownies, etc. They actually come out
better than in my regular (gas) oven because the toaster oven is
electric (yeah, yeah, there's a pattern there - I desperately need a
new oven but I simply can't afford it. I'll have to make do until the
thing disintegrates).

It's an inexpensive Black and Decker (who consistently got the best
overall ratings everywhere I checked) that I got at WalMart for about
$35. I'm really quite pleased with it.

Every day. I even bought one for work because I wanted to have my
bagel and toast it too. Both are cheapos and work just fine.

Rarely.

Only to reheat fried stuff, like Tater Tots.
A toaster oven is the best thing to maintain
crispiness.

I can't remember the last time I did this.
I don't eat much fried food.

I have a Sharp combination microwave and toaster oven.
I think it was a good buy. I wish they had made it
a combination with a convection oven, too, just to
round out the possibilities.

But I thought Black & Decker was the cheap brand! ;-)

I've got a toaster oven, also Black & Decker, that I use several times a
week. I don't have a toaster, so do some amount of toasting in it, as well
as baking vegetables quite often. I don't use it for broiling.

Mine is about 15 years old and I have the optional mounting kit for
attaching it to the bottom of the cabinets. It seems as if no one makes
under cabinet mounted units these days, so I hope mine never breaks.

We have a Cusinart toaster oven and use it daily (no toaster).
We've been through maybe four toaster ovens in our adult life;
the last time we bought a cheapo one it was inadequate quality
due to Walmartization I suspect; something like the Cusinart
seemed more reasonable.

I love my Cuisinart, and my guess is I've spent its price over the years on
crappy models. It was time to pay up and get a good one.

I have a 1500w Cusinart toaster oven w/convection I bought a little over a
year ago. It's a good unit.

I don't get as much use out of it as I thought I would. Maybe a dozen times
since purchase.

The convection cooking feature was my main interest/curiosity and it does a
fine job at it. It has made some great lean steaks that way.

My toaster oven is used daily and then some. Will not ever do without
one. I find them indespensible <g>.

I've gone through several B&D space-saver toaster ovens the past few
years and they've all gone kaput (dang it). The bad news is it's not
replaceable -- B&D no longer makes the space-saver models ;( B&D
replaced my last space-saver model (at no charge) with a regular counter
top version, but it didn't last very long (plus it was rather large).
So, I opted for a Rival model this last go-around. So far, so good.

I use mine more often than I use my oven. It cooks small casserole
type things, reheats food, makes toast, pizza, frozen food, etc.

Its odd that you mention it. Lately, I have been eating out a lot
because I have been so busy. On Friday after work, I asked a colleague
what his plans for the evening were and he said he had a craving for
Shake & Bake chicken so he was going home to make some. Its been many
years since I made Shake 'N Bake, but I decided the time was right to
make it again.

That got me interested in making some Shake 'N Bake chicken too, so on
my way home, I picked up a package of chicken legs and Shake 'N Bake. I
bought their new garlic and herb flavor.

I realized that since it was just me, I would just put the breaded
chicken legs in my Black & Decker toaster/convection oven and see how
they turned out. I used the convection oven feature and the chicken
turned out moist and delicious and with a good coating too.

I ate that with some corn and string beans! The chicken was so good, I
ate all six legs in one sitting!

I loved my GE two slice toaster oven back when GE still had a small
appliance division. When I had it I used it almost daily. I had
young children then, so I made snacks in it. After my last one died,
I bought a Delonghi and was not impressed. For starters, it was way
too big. I don't remember if it died or I gave it away. I use a
regular toaster and my oven now. I don't need another appliance
sitting on my countertop.

My bread machine is also a toaster oven. I use it all the time. I'ts
used as a backup when I'm home and I also have one in my winter place in
Texas. The one in texas gets a lot of use because I absolutely hate the
RV gas oven.

That is VERY interesting! What do you bake in it beside bread?

Amen to that! If you broil something in one the top is nearly as hot
as the coils on the inside of the oven. But I do like mine for
baking.

Well it is shaped just like a square box so anything that fits on the
shelf. Cake, casseroles, etc. It's made by Philips but I don't think
they are available any longer. They work too well and last too long.

Do you make this stuff up as you go along? Obviously you've never seen the
Black & Decker kit. It is very well designed and made. The mounting system
has a vented heat shield that stands off from the bottom of the cabinet and
vents the heat beyond the front of the cabinet face. The toaster oven is
suspended below the heat shield and the heat shield is suspended below the
cabinet bottom. Neither the cabinet bottom or front gets hot or even very
warm, though it probably is several degrees warmer than the room
temperature.

I'm sure if there were any safety issues, there would have been a product
recall by now. Just to be absolutely sure, I checked the CPSC web site for
any toaster oven recalls for Black & Decker and for the predecessor General
Electric model. There are no recalls for toaster ovens. There is a single
recall for a under cabinet toaster (not toaster oven) with a very different
fire scenario. The recalled model pops the door open at the end of the toast
cycle. If what was inside caught on fire, popping the door open would cause
flames to escape and reach the cabinets. This has nothing to do with the hot
top of the toaster oven burning the bottom of the cabinet. Therefore the
model I have was never recalled. My model was very widely distributed when
it was made, and I would guess many people bought the cabinet mount kit to
go with it.

Go check the CSPC web site yourself if you don't believe it:

www.cpsc.gov

Or for the TOASTER recall:

i see b & d's mentioned often on the thread. does anyone have the
toastmaster tov400 or tov200? can you really broil a steak in these
things? i've been disappointed in the results with my farberware
indoor broiler lately.

Not that I have the model you're interested in, but I gave up long ago
trying to broil in a toaster oven. I've even largely given up broiling beef
steaks in my below oven gas broiler on my stove (I will broil salmon steaks
there). I get better results by pan broiling in a cast iron skillet. Plus I
can make a pan sauce. If I had a better broiler on my gas stove, I might
feel differently about it, but pan broiling is an excellent way of doing it
as long as the meat isn't too thick. If it is thicker, it can be pan broiled
then finished in the oven.

I had a toaster oven/broiler that was a gift; I think it was a Black &
Decker, not sure now. Used it for about 3 years then the door hinges broke.
I did use it a lot! Sadly, I don't have the counterspace for a toaster oven
in this kitchen. I do have a toaster although I rarely use it. It's just a
cheap 2-slot (wide slots) toaster. I'm reminded of when I was married and
didn't have a toaster *or* a toaster oven. The broiler element in the oven
works perfectly well for making toast, you just have to watch it closely.

I couldn't live without my toaster oven. There
are many things that you just can't reheat or
cook in the microwave.

> If so how often?

Almost every day. I usualy have bread with my
meals so I either toast it (for breakfast) or
put butter on it and semi-toast it for dinner
(this is day-old bread that has been stored in
the fridge - I hate cold bread - it tastes like
just baked when you reheat it this way!)

I reheat pizze and many other foods in it.
Anything that needs to be browned and crisp
on the outside. I use it when I don't want
to bother with the oven.

However, I don't really bake anything from
scratch in it. I maily use it for toasting
and reheating.

I do also. I love it.

The Black & Decker kit is a simple piece of sheet metal that couldn't have
cost more than $2 to make. I don't remember the exact selling price, but it
was reasonably inexpensive at the time. It's not a cheap and safe issue,
it's an issue of whether they think the market is there. One of the issues
is that the toaster oven was designed to hang in the mount. This presents
certain styling problems, which I am sure are important. I'm certain a lot
of toaster ovens are bought on styling alone.

Last night I used my toaster oven for about 45 minutes at 350 degrees. The
increase in the temperature of the cabinet face was not really detectable.
The cabinet bottom, on the outside the cabinet and above the toaster oven
was the slightest bit warm. Even at full broil for an extended period I
would doubt it would reach a hazardous level.
