The best dishes for a candlelight dinner are dishes that are prepared in advance and will hold well. The purpose is to pay attention to your SO and not have then standing in the kitchen watching you slave over a stove. First determine the menu, soup or salad? Both can be prepared in advance and just dressed and served. As far as the main course timing is critical you want something like a Beef Wellington which will hold for several hours or a braised dish like Osso Buco, braised lamb shanks or a ragout. Need a starch? got a rice cooker? Veggies are easy, just blanch and shock in ice water. Then reheat in a burnt butter sauce. They will be warm and crispy. For dessert hopefully you've covered the loaf of bread , the jug of wine, and now it's time for the THOU! Enjoy Dimitri |

Real men like rice or potatoes. Swiss steak or baked chicken works well too. You'll need to know what he likes though. If he's vegetarian, that changes things. My practical suggestion is to not think too much about it. Whenever I plan things very carefully, there is more details and more things to go wrong. Just a general idea might work best, and then don't spend hours preparing it. Otherwise you might be frustrated if he only eats a few bites because he grabbed a candy bar earlier. dkw |

Why is there such desperation in your post.....reply as soon as possible please.....? Since we don't have a "boyfriend", it becomes impossible to answer questions like....dietary restrictions....vegetarian...etc. Date him for three months and get back with us. |

Frankly, >anything can be eaten by candlelight if you like it ![]() I'd be cautious about fish, if it has lots of little bones in it -- it can be hard to separate them out at low light levels, and it's unromantic even in candlelight to have to spit out a mouthful of food because it contained all these tiny bones. Spaghetti is iffy because a fraction of people have never learned how to eat it. Similarly Asian noodles that require slurping are a bad idea. However, penne or fettucini (perhaps some fresh fettucini) would be fine. If you do all the prep work ahead of time, then you only need to take a few minutes to boil it and serve. Steve |

Or, maybe you could give him four choices to pick from; steak, chicken, Italian, fish, or vegetarian and go from there. |

With all the ripping and tearing and slurp, slurpping? Why, it's guaranteed to sway the most reticent of dinner guests! |
