Here's a link to a website I heard about on
the radio news yesterday. Try inserting a zip code (not necessarily your own if you're uncomfortable about that) and see what comes up. Also, check out the pictures at the top of the page and see how they jibe with the experience you expect from the typical restaurant listed. The site is apparently new (I have no connection with it) and maybe if it develops over time, it might serve a purpose for some people, but I have my doubts. http://www.healthydiningfinder.com/site/ |

In my zip code, well within 20 miles, it found, in this order, Burger King, Domino's Pizza, Arby's, Chili's, Cracker Barrel and Macaroni Grille. I don't call that healthy eating! kili |

For Olympia, it found Domino's, Burger King, Arby's, Panda Express, and Pho Hoa. The latter might qualify as somewhat healthy (noodle soup), but I'm with you, Kili, those are some weird results. I notice this site is "in collaboration with" the National Restaurant Assoc. Seems like it's just another way to advertise to me... -- Jani in WA |

Burger King, Chili's, Hooters, PF Chang, Macaroni Grill, Applebees. And then this, from the 'nutrition criteria" section of the site.......quite a mismatch from these restaurants.... You are here For Diners > Nutrition Criteria Nutrition Criteria Healthy Dining's expert staff of registered dietitians and master's level health/nutrition professionals consults with each restaurant to find menu items that meet the nutrition criteria outlined below, which are based on many of the recommendations of leading health organizations. Healthy Dining's nutrition staff reviews all menu items before posting them on the site. 1. Entrées (or full meals) must include at least one of the following: * fruits and/or vegetables * lean protein, i.e., skinless white meat poultry, fish/seafood (including salmon), tofu, etc., with no more than two red meat dishes per restaurant * 100% whole grains 2. Menu items must meet the following three criteria: * Entrées (or full meals): * 750 calories or less * 25 grams of fat or less * 8 grams of saturated fat or less * Appetizers, side dishes and desserts: * 250 calories or less * 8 grams of fat or less * 3 grams of saturated fat or less If a menu item exceeds only one of these criteria (fat, saturated fat, or calorie) by a small margin (i.e., 10%), that item may be included on the website. Whenever possible, menu items that are lower in sodium and cholesterol are featured. 3. Deep fried items (i.e., egg rolls, chicken fingers, tostada shells, etc.) are excluded from the website, except for very small amounts of garnishes, such as wonton strips. SOOOOOOOO....I read further and looked to see what foods they recommended. At Burger King, you can have:TENDERGRILL® Chicken Garden Salad, BK VEGGIE® Burger, TENDERGRILL® Chicken Sandwich, WHOPPER JR.® - SPECIAL REQUEST, Side Garden Salad, Side item: MOTTS Strawberry Flavoerd Applesauce. Thanks.....I'll stick to one of the healthier places with more options. Cfrazy world we live in - healthy eating means to go to Burger King and order a veggieburger, side salad and applesauce. <SIGH> |

McDonald's is totally out. The only one that seems to give realistic options of anything even resembling healthy is Wendy's. Of course, even then the sodium content is way off. Your best bet is to prepare something at home *always*. Even if your too busy, it's almost always better than the content of fast food.
