Default Chocolate Prices To Go Up

There is a drought in Africa, cocoa beans are dying and the price of
cocoa (and therefore chocolate) is going up. (

Roughly 40% of the world cocao supply is from the Ivory Coast, which has
been plagued with violence for the last few years. It is also produced in
south and central America and in Indonesia.

Got this off the cooking group. Hoard your chocolate now. I KNEW there was a
reason I was keeping my Dark chocolate Dove Promises all to myself this week.
If those sad kid eyes aren't getting any out of me..

If you recall, several weeks ago, there was a report published stating
chocolate had beneficial properties. One of the beneficial properties
was getting people to buy more chocolate.

Want prices to go down? Don't buy chocolate.

Don't even THINK it! <G>

Some people worry about oil prices when stuff happens there. All I can think
about is El Rey.

Cocoa beans are dying? They were going to die
anyway, during fermentation and roasting. :-)

If the cacao trees were dying, that would be
more serious. :-)

There was a rumor like this a few years ago,
and it didn't happen then. I'm not going to
worry about it this time. If anything, it's
probably just a story created by traders trying
to goose the price.

Africa produces the cheapest grades of cacao.
I'd be more worried about instability in
Venezuela, which produces some of the highest
grades of cacao.
