Good Lord! I'm in the majority tho' a better question might have
been "Every year or so, whether it needs it or not!" (Like
Elizabeth 1st's baths!)

I think a lot of people don't empty the whole thing out, they
just clean a shelf here, a shelf there.

I would have added another choice:

"When it needs it."

I'm sure that's what everyone does... and everyone's needs are
different.

Funny - that's what I was doing when I thought of sending Cathy the
survey suggestion. IOW, because I was cleaning a shelf at a time, I
thought it was about time I stripped the whole fridge. Still haven't
done it, though. ;-(

LOL, I always empty my old food containers on garbage day, but scrubbing the
fridge? Heck, I can't even bend over anymore. It's looking pretty cruddy.
Do I get a hat? :~)

We don't usually have enough food in ours to warrant emptying the whole
thing, so yeah, I clean a shelf here and there. It's pretty easy to do. If
something spills, it just takes a wipe, that way.

I hear ya. I'm not the best at cleaning the refrigerator, what
I'm pretty good at is not getting it very dirty. But once in
a while, it all has to come out. I wait for the right day, not
too hot, not too cold. A day when there isn't much in there.
This gives me plenty of reason to put it off. The day isn't just
right! Heh.

It's nice to get everything out, get the bottles of stuff washed
off, the shelves ... then put back in an organized way. I think
I'll do that this week.

I have the kind of fridge that has modular components, like the
shelves in the doors, etc. I am trying to clean it on a steady basis,
like maybe 1 shelf or door shelf a week. That way, it won't become
overwhelming, and it will stay pretty clean.

At least that is my intention.

WARNING - Cleaning out the fridge can be a hazardous experience... the
other day I noticed it was getting pretty grimy so I started wiping...
and when I came to the side where the door was attached, I bumped one
of the stupid door shelves and sent it flying onto the (tile) floor.
Everything in it smashed to smitherenes except the mustard (cause that
was in plastic) and it took an hour to gingerly clean it all up. I
think I'll leave it dirty from now on!

Default Weekend survey on the RFC site: Cleaning out the fridge...

Reminds me of an ugly incident a few years back.
We go away for 3 weeks hols each Nov/Dec (back for Christmas) & Mum
had* a key to our place to check on things while we were away.
Bear in mind we had been GONE for upwards of 2 weeks and on the day we
were coming home, dear Mum decided it was time she came around and put
linoleum in my kitchen cupboards.
Now when we go away on hols we take a truck load of food/beverages
with us, some of which comes back unused. (Better to be overstocked
than understocked as there are no supermarkets where we habitually
holiday)
We arrived home at 2pm Saturday to find Mum on her hands and knees
still lining the shelves - every single piece of crockery, glassware,
pastics, saucepans etc covered the entirety of the dining & loung
surfaces.
She'd been hard at it for nearly 2 hours apparently.
I opened my fridge/freezer upright to put in the 3L milk we'd bought
on the way home, only to find enormously long 'stalegmites &
stalegtites' of MOULD growing downward & upward & outward throughout
the fridge... seems the motor must have packed it in within hours of
our departure and had been enjoying the conditions and ability to
stock up on pennicillin!
The 'bio-hazard' sign sure would have come in handy that day!!
Not only did we have 3 weeks worth of holiday gear to unpack, an
entire kitchen to 'replace' but an utterly gross and stinky fridge to
deal with.
It was so bad I had to hurl ALL the tupperware containers - despite
soaking in bleach solution for nearly a week, still could not remove
the foul odour from them!
The old fridge was way beyond repair (and besides NOTHING would budge
the horrid grey staining from all that mould) and my new fridge was a
much appreciated addition to the kitchen......
although the new fridge's shelving sold here don't allow for tall
items, which end up having to be laid down. A real pain. But the
solid plastic shelves (which prevent spillages ending up over
everything else lower down in the fridge) are a brilliant innovation
imho.

Jokingly told Mum I would have preferred her to buy the milk, see the
fridge problem and have dealt with THAT rather than new shelf
coverings in the cupboards... sad thing was, I was NOT joking!! It
took bloody hours to clean it up as best we could and even then it was
'dead in the water' so my efforts (and stomach churning) were for
nought.
I now live in dread of the next appliance death......... stuff
nightmares are made of!
