King of Queens reruns (gosh that show is funny), Larry King, Greta, or
QVC or the Food Channel. I guess I listen to the TV.

I have the iPod connected to the Bose wave radio, blasting random(3000) tunes
at maximum volume.

We listen to TV or if it['s music, usually listen to Loreena
McKennitt, Lagan soundtrack, or possibly classical piano. If I need some
energy, I'll pop in some bellydancing CDs (Arabic to Indian)

It also depends WHAT I'm cooking. Sometimes I like to set a complete
mood with the music and food matching. I little Edith Piaf for a French
dinner. Indian music for an Indian meal. DH does massage so we also play
quiet music that sounds a bit Zen-like or Asian, maybe Nativer American
flute and drum, with lots of nature sounds.

Usually, I sing. Mostly, I only listen to music when I'm at my
computer, because if I put the radio on loudly enough to hear it, I
worry that it will disturb James, who is usually working while I cook.

When I'm home alone, though, I often have CDs going -- lately, a lot
of Ani DiFranco and Nanci Griffith and John Gorka.

I love the Lagaan soundtrack! I just bought the CD and listen to it at
work all the time.

My cats singing to me. "All Things Considered" is on too early here
to accompany my cooking.

Not always the problem. I had problems when broiling, setting off the smoke
alarm. No trace of visible smoke, and no objectionable odors. But it still
went off.

The normal smoke detector is the ionization type, and it is very sensitive
to cooking.
After two of these, the second of which was for kitchen areas I finally got
a photoelectric type. It doesn't have all the false alarms that the
ionization type was giving me. But even it will go off sometimes when I am
using my wok.

On the music thing, I listen to classical mostly.

That's not a bad choice but I also listen to the same things as
I do when not cooking: classical music from WBJC in Baltimore
or, occasionally, WETA in Washington, DC.

Nothing. My stereo is in the family room. I have speakers there and in the
living room, the later being next to the kitchen. I have to turn it up to
loud to be able to hear it clearly in the kitchen. We have a small radio in
the kitchen but the sound quality is the pits. I tend to find the radio
shows and music distracting when cooking. Perhaps the problem is that I do
not like music as background because it becomes just that, noise. If I am
listening to music, I like it to be cranked up so that it is what I am
listening to rather than just additional sounds happening around me.

Mine goes off every time I do burgers inside. Perfectly done, and the

But they are at least 2,000 away. I don't think I can pick up their signal.
I will have to content myself with the sound of the exhaust fan and
tripping over the dogs.

The net feeds work pretty good, even over that distance.

In fact I listened to them pretty often when traveling through
Europe earlier this year, so as to not get homesick.

It's funny that if I really do mess up cooking, not only will the smoke
detector on the first floor go off, but so will the one on the second floor.
Luckily I've never got the one on the third floor going too.

Unfortunately I don't have a range hood (old double oven stove), and the
exhaust fan is in the ceiling so it doesn't catch everything.

I have this neat BOSE home theater system which stores up to 350 CDs on
the hard drive. I can then play everything I own randomly all day long.
I have a very eclectic assortment of music.

Me too. I smell the aromas and watch. I listen to the food and think
about Julia Child and other great cooks and try to make each meal as
good as I can.

The kids in my family never refused to try anything I've made.
(Neither have the adults).

What did you cook that weekend in 1983 when kfjc played "Louie, Louie"
for 63 hours? ( a grand total of 863 versions including a tape of the
Oakland branch of the Hell's Angels singing it for a solid 45 minutes)

Ha, I remember that.

The answer is there was no webcast at that point yet; we could pick
up KFJC in the car radio, but not the tuner in the hi-fi system.

Mostly NPR. But, on Saturdays there's a show on kvmr in Nevada City
that plays 2 hours of Cajun, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop.

I have my IPod Nano home station in the kitchen, so I get to hear all
my faves. If I get tired of that (not likely) there's also the
fallback of the family room TV and its music stations or CD/DVD
player. I do love to listen to music when I cook!

Either National Radio (our equivalent of NPR) or a CD.

Common choices for CDs:

Billy Bragg and Wilco -- Mermaid Avenue (lyrics of Woody Guthrie's, set
to music by the artists)

Massive Attack

The Matrix soundtrack

Robbie Robertson -- Music for The Native Americans or Contact with the
Underworld of Redboy
