I was in Byerly's earlier in the week and damn near had a stroke. I was
looking for lamb shanks. I've never cooked them but order them out when I can. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! They were something like $15/lb. What they had were frozen (individually) and large -- running between $10 and $14 EACH. Is this "what they cost?" Call the paramedics. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://jamlady.eboard.com - Comfort Food for Bob Pastorio, updated 3-16-2007 http://web.mac.com/barbschaller - blahblahblog - Orange Honey Garlic Chicken, 3-29-2007 http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amytaylor |

What's >the big deal about lamb and Easter? In a word, Passover. This year it begins at sunset on Monday April 2nd and ends at sunset on the 9th in Israel (the 10th outside). Roasted lambs shanks is one of the traditional dishes served at the first night Seder. Christ died before sunset of the day the Passover began and is symbolically the 'sacrificial lamb' for Christians. Harkening back to the first Passover where a lamb was sacrificed on that day, its blood spread on the lintel to save the faithful from the wrath of the angel of death, and the lamb consumed before midnight. |

I wouldn't pay more than a buck and a half. Yesterday I paid $1.19/ doz for jumbo double yolkers at Stewarts. http://www.stewartsshops.com/Content...y&ContentID=49 Often they have a sale on small eggs; 99 cents/2 dozen... that's a great buy. I picked up to packages of lamb shanks this afternoon, 3 shanks in each pack. On of them was $3.75 and the other was $4.06. SiL is coming to visit next week and my lamb shanks with caramelized onions is her favourite dish. Lamb Shanks are a funny thing. Sometimes I do not see them for weeks. Then I start seeing them in stores but the price can range from a very expensive meal to a very reasonable one. |

Rack of lamb is probably my favourite dish. I used to be able to pick up two racks for $15-16. For the last year or so they have been at least $15.00 per rack. |

That sounds just too darn pricey to be correct(?). I know prices (for nearly anything) fluctuate with seasons and holidays. JFIS (just for information's sake), I called a nearby Schnuck's to ask what their price was for lamb shanks, and I was told $4.19/lb. HTH. Sky |

Byerly's is many things. It is *never* cheap. I suspect someplace like the Holy Land would be much cheaper for lamb (though probably not as convenient for you). As a rule, I never buy meat at Byerly's--just too too ridiculous. Cheese is another thing I could never afford if I bought it there. Luckily, there is Surdyk's. Mike Beede |

Another Syrdyk's fan! We might do the Stone Arch art festival this year and a trip to Syrdyk's for wine & cheese is definitely on the menu (so to speak) if we do! As it is we'll be going to Edina in June and eating breakfast at least once at Jensen's Cafe in Burnsville. Jill |

I'll be going to Kramarczuk's this week and may see what they've got. And since I'll be going that far NE I may as well see my sister for a cuppa and hit Holy Land on Central and then Ready Meats on 36th & Johnson. It's an honest-to-god butcher shop. They still cut meat and they don't shoot it up with salt water. Never even gave half a thought to Holy Land. Thank you for the suggestion. I don't usually shop at Byerly's but there've been more than two times when I HAVE gotten excellent prices on some meats -- pork tenderloins last Nov-Dec come to mind. I do think their deli is vastly overrated, though. :-) Thanks again. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://jamlady.eboard.com - Comfort Food for Bob Pastorio, updated 3-16-2007 http://web.mac.com/barbschaller - blahblahblog - Orange Honey Garlic Chicken, 3-29-2007 http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amytaylor |

',;~}~ (Englandian perspective follows): Yes, right - lamb shanks! - Used to be they were a cheap joint, almost a butcher's left-overs, but they cook up so damned tasty on a 'wet, long and low' and SO juicily tender, that they, with the speeding up of global information exchanging, became increasingly /> massively popular. The price took off faster than an ICBM. Same sad deal with so much of what has always trad. been 'peasant food'. I love the bloody things myself! Cooked in the oven, in a clay pot, with lots of tasty veggies and a li'l herbyness, or same deal but with a li'l GOOD red wine, lots of aliums, and few hand's-full of redcurrents, juices and such all of course to be reduced into a nice serving sauce! Give 'em between 4 and 7 hours on a low heat - for numbers, well, figure it out yerself! Heheheheh... Shaun aRe -- May all your wishes be both wise and fulfilled. |

My neighborhood grocery has a lot of Muslim customers. I noticed the
last couple weeks that they are selling NZ lamb for what I consider an outrageous price. Not $18/lb for shanks, but close to $10/lb for unspecified "NZ lamb." Domestic lamb has been around its usual price. Lamb shanks have been around $3.49/lb. The recently had domestic leg of lamb for $3.99/lb. I bought a 4-lb sirloin end piece. Look for lamb heads, tongues, sweetbreads, etc., next week--I was told last night that Catholic and Greek Easter fall on the same day this year (as, I am also told, they do every four years). -bwg Melba's Jammin' wrote: > In article >, > jay > wrote: > > > On Fri, 30 Mar 2007 10:59:06 -0500, Melba's Jammin' wrote: > > > > > I was in Byerly's earlier in the week and damn near had a stroke. Barry. <grin> Protestants and Catholics do the day on the same schedule; the Orthodox date varies. And whoever gave you the every four years thing is full of hrutka and kolbasa. "-) There's no pattern that I can readily discern as far as how frequently they coincide. It is not, however, every four years. Sometimes it's 11. Sometimes 3. Sometimes 1. Sometimes other. What I can tell you is that one of the factors that is part of calculating the date for Orthodox Easter is that it *always* comes after the start of Passover. Both Western and Orthodox also consider the spring equinox in the calculation. The dates themselves can be anywhere from concurrent to, I believe, 5 weeks apart. You're welcome. "-) I couldn't find any lamb shanks around here; I'm thinking I'll be looking in a Halal market or one that caters to Middle Eastern preferences and desirables. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://jamlady.eboard.com - Comfort Food for Bob Pastorio, updated 3-16-2007 http://web.mac.com/barbschaller - blahblahblog - Orange Honey Garlic Chicken, 3-29-2007 http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amytaylor |

It's not a hanging offense but I'd hate for the misinformation to be perpetuated and tucked away as useless trivia to be resurrected <cough> at a later date by someone who would say, "I read somewhere that Orthodox Easter blahblahblah." If you ever get a chance to attend an Orthodox Easter vigil service, take it! The faith is laden with ritual * and the best part of the service, IMNSHO is a particular reading that the priest does * I have posted it on my jamlady.eboard.com site * the note is A Prayer for Bob Pastorio. I'll never be confused with a deeply pious person but I am a woman of faith and I find the words beautiful and rich and full of promise. As ever, YMMV. :-) It's a lovely read. > Even better, maybe I should try not to talk about stuff I don't know. Heck, Barry, why would any of us want to change at this late date! <g> -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://jamlady.eboard.com - Comfort Food for Bob Pastorio, updated 3-16-2007 http://web.mac.com/barbschaller - blahblahblog - Orange Honey Garlic Chicken, 3-29-2007 http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amytaylor |
